The iconic Triathlon of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife will celebrate its 32nd edition on Saturday 25th July, solidifying its status as the longest-running event of its kind in the Canary Islands.

Next Saturday, 25th July, the bay of Arrecife will once again be the stage for the RCNA Triathlon, an event that has reached 32 years and is now the oldest of its kind in the Canary Islands. Organised by the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife and supported by the Canary Islands Triathlon Federation (FECANTRI), it will bring together athletes of all ages and levels in a festive and competitive atmosphere.

Israel Caraballo, delegate of FECANTRI in Lanzarote, expressed his satisfaction with the continuity of the event:

“This will be the 32nd edition, which positions the triathlon as the longest-running in all of the Canary Islands.”
The organisation hopes to exceed the number of participants from previous years, with participation ranging from beginners to the top triathletes of the archipelago.

Two Distances for All Levels

This year, the triathlon will offer two distances. The Open Sprint category consists of 750 metres of swimming, 20 kilometres of cycling, and 5 kilometres of running, a classic route that has become a hallmark of the event. The swimming segment will take place in the waters of the bay of Arrecife, the cycling segment will head towards the Castillo de San José, and the running segment will go south towards Playa del Cable, returning to the finish line.

New this year is the Supersprint category, which will be part of the Canary Islands Talent Series and will host the Canary Islands Championship in the children’s, cadet, and youth categories. Participants will swim 400 metres, cycle 6.8 kilometres, and run 2 kilometres. This is a perfect opportunity for younger athletes to start in triathlon or compete at a regional level.

A Triathlon for Everyone, from Novices to Elite

Israel Caraballo highlighted that the Arrecife triathlon has always been characterised as

“very accessible for all athletes, both for those who are just starting out and for those more experienced in this distance.”
The presence of nearly all the triathletes who lead the events in the archipelago guarantees a high competitive level, but the open atmosphere and well-organised event make it possible for any enthusiast to feel part of the celebration.

For the residents of Arrecife and visitors, the event represents an additional tourist and sporting attraction in the summer calendar of Lanzarote. The streets around the nautical club and Playa del Cable will witness the efforts of the participants, and it is expected that the public will turn out to cheer at each segment.

The event is set for Saturday 25th July, starting from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. Registrations are still open, and the organisers encourage interested parties to sign up as soon as possible, given the pace of confirmations. Thirty-two years later, the RCNA Triathlon continues to demonstrate that it is much more than just a race: it is a tradition that unites the island around sport.
