El Burrero beach, in Ingenio, will be the epicentre of the wingfoil world from July 20 to 25 with the fourth edition of the Gran Canaria GWA WingFoil World Cup. Over 120 athletes from 13 nationalities will compete in three disciplines.
The coastline of Ingenio is preparing for a week of excitement. El Burrero beach will host the fourth edition of the Gran Canaria GWA WingFoil World Cup from July 20 to 25, an event that brings together more than 120 athletes from 13 nationalities, making the municipality the global centre for this wind sport.
The competition, presented this Wednesday at the Casa Palacio del Cabildo de Gran Canaria, has the institutional backing of the Cabildo, the Ingenio City Council, and the Royal Canary Sailing Federation. The event is organised by the Canakite Experiences Sports Club, presided over by Manuel Martínez.
Three championships in one week
The programme kicks off on July 20 with the Open Cup of the Canary Islands in WingFoil Slalom, featuring over 40 participants arriving from Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. On the 21st and 22nd, the Gran Canaria World Cup of WingFoil FreeFly-Slalom will take place, with nearly 40 entrants, and from the 23rd to the 25th, the Gran Canaria World Cup of WingFoil Surf-Freestyle will see over 50 competitors participating.
Among the participants are the Spanish Nia Suardiaz, an eight-time world champion in various disciplines, and the American Christopher Macdonald, a three-time world champion. Both lead an elite list that includes the world champions of 2025 and the top-ranked athletes of 2026.
El Burrero, a consolidated spot
The mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín, highlighted during the presentation the high level of female participation, which exceeds 45% of the entrants. "As a woman coming from sports, I know how difficult it has often been to compete in traditionally male-dominated spaces. The fact that this championship has such a high female presence is a source of pride," she stated.
The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, praised the island's natural conditions for wingfoil practice and emphasised the international impact of the event. "Wind is one of Gran Canaria's great resources, both energetically and sportively," he noted.
The councillor for Tourism, Rubén Cruz, explained that the event presents an opportunity to project the image of the municipality in numerous countries. "We want to show a little piece of Ingenio to all participants and visitors," he indicated.
For his part, the councillor for Beaches, Martín García, celebrated that El Burrero will host the event for the second consecutive year. "The first edition already put the beach on the international wingfoil map, and this continuity consolidates the work we are doing to promote this location," he affirmed.
The president of the Canakite Experiences Sports Club, Manuel Martínez, assured that Gran Canaria has established itself as a fixed stop on the world circuit. "We want to continue growing the event, adding participants and new disciplines, and consolidating El Burrero as one of the great spots in the world," he expressed.
Economic impact and tourist projection
The island councillor for Sports, Aridany Romero, highlighted that events of this magnitude generate significant economic impact and reinforce the island's positioning as a destination for nature sports. The competition, part of the official circuit of the Global Wingsports Association (GWA), is broadcast live through digital platforms, amplifying its global reach.
For the residents of Ingenio, the event represents an opportunity to enjoy a top-level sports spectacle right on the beach. Admission is free, and attendees are advised to bring sun protection and water, as the days will take place outdoors and temperatures in July are usually high.
Wingfoil, a discipline that combines surfing with a sail and a foil that lifts the board above the water, has experienced exponential growth in recent years. The Canary Islands, with their constant trade winds, have become one of the preferred destinations for riders from all over the world. The event at El Burrero is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated on the calendar.
