Four hooded individuals robbed a jewellery store in the El Mirador shopping centre on Tuesday night. The National Police are investigating whether the same group is behind other violent thefts on the island.
The National Police have intensified the search for the gang of four robbers who raided a jewellery store in the El Mirador shopping centre, located in the San Fernando area of Maspalomas, on Tuesday night. Officers are analysing whether this group is linked to other violent robberies that have occurred in Gran Canaria in recent months.
The thieves, who acted with their faces covered and carried hammers and bags for the loot, fled in a dark grey Cupra Formentor. According to initial investigations, the vehicle had been stolen days earlier, a pattern that is repeating in other robberies.
A similar modus operandi in several robberies
Investigators have detected similarities between this robbery and one that took place a month ago at the Las Terrazas shopping centre, located just across from El Mirador. In both cases, the criminals used a fire extinguisher to create a white cloud that hindered their identification and fled on foot in a stolen car. Furthermore, the attacked jewellery stores belong to the same chain.
Since February, there have been six violent robberies of businesses on the island, including a raid at a shopping centre in San Fernando, a jewellery store in Carrizal, a gaming hall in Telde, and the jewellery stores at Las Terrazas and the Cita shopping centre. Only in one of these cases have arrests been made, and that was because the robbers crashed the car into a house under construction during a chase.
The National Police are comparing security camera footage and witness testimonies to match the physical characteristics of the perpetrators. They are also tracking the stolen jewellery, having conducted an inventory with the managers of the affected establishments, in an attempt to locate it in pawn shops or online pages.
The atmosphere in El Mirador after the robbery
Twelve hours after the robbery, the affected jewellery store opened its doors only for three sales assistants to assess the damages. One of them, who was present during the robbery, stated that she was still in "shock". The rest of the shops in the centre opened normally, although those closest opted to lower their shutters immediately at dusk.
The jewellery store on the ground floor still remembers the two robberies they suffered in 2025. In one of them, the criminals took advantage of a football match between Real Madrid and Arsenal to enter the store and take the jewellery, after a confrontation with a security guard. In the first assault, they took more items; in the second, although the loot was smaller, the damage was greater.
The National Police are keeping several lines of investigation open and do not rule out that the gang may have also acted in other establishments on the island. Meanwhile, local merchants are calling for more security measures to prevent these incidents from happening again.
