The Cabildo of La Gomera activates the fourth edition of the New Employment Opportunities programme on July 1, with an investment of €722,000 to hire 14 young people with higher education.
The Cabildo of La Gomera launched on Tuesday, July 1, the fourth edition of the New Employment Opportunities (NOE) programme, an initiative aimed at facilitating the first work experience for trained young people. The investment amounts to €722,000, financed by the Canary Islands Development Fund, and will allow for the hiring of 14 individuals for a specified period.
The selected profiles cover areas such as nursing and geriatrics assistants, higher technicians in administration and finance, early childhood educators, psychologists, agricultural engineers, and law graduates. The young people will join various areas of the island administration to develop functions related to their qualifications.
A consolidated programme with results
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that the NOE “has consolidated itself as a useful tool within the active employment policies of the island institution, because it allows trained young people to access their first professional experience in their homeland.” In its four editions, the programme has accumulated an investment close to €2.9 million and has benefited a total of 74 young people.
Curbelo emphasized that “we are talking about real opportunities, practical training, and professional support so that those who have completed their studies can improve their employability and, at the same time, contribute to the functioning of the island administration.”
La Gomera below the youth unemployment average
The programme helps maintain favourable youth unemployment indicators on the island. According to data provided by the Cabildo, the youth unemployment rate in La Gomera stands at 4.77%, below the 5.3% average for the Canary Islands. “These figures demonstrate that active employment policies have an impact when they are planned with continuity, resources, and addressing the real needs of the population,” Curbelo noted.
For young people in La Gomera, this initiative represents an opportunity to work on the island without having to emigrate. The programme strengthens essential public services, especially in areas such as health, education, and administration, which benefit from the incorporation of qualified personnel.
More employment for those over 60
The start of the NOE coincides with other employment plans from the Cabildo, such as the programme for people over 60, which offers 155 job positions with an investment of €3.4 million. Curbelo explained that “from the Cabildo, we continue to bet on policies that generate opportunities at all stages of working life.”
Those interested in future calls can check the Cabildo of La Gomera's website to stay informed about registration deadlines. The fourth edition of the NOE is already underway, and the 14 young people will begin their contracts in the coming days.
