The Cabildo of La Gomera allocates €3.5 million annually to the road maintenance operation, which is reinforced due to the increase in traffic during summer.

The Columbian Island is preparing for the summer influx. The Cabildo of La Gomera has launched a reinforcement of the maintenance and conservation operation of its roads, a measure that responds to the expected increase in vehicles during the summer months. The island institution invests €3.5 million each year in this service, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A team of 48 workers for 17 roads

The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, explained that the device is made up of 48 workers, with a daily schedule covering 17 island roads. “In this way, we contribute to keeping the island roads in good condition and prepared to ensure communications and inter-island transfers,” Curbelo pointed out.

The operation focuses not only on repairs but also on the cleaning and conservation of road elements. According to the island's Roads Councillor, Aníbal González, various actions have been carried out in recent weeks, such as cleaning and conditioning gardens, clearing ditches and edges, and the scheduled cleaning of stops and viewpoints, which includes disinfection, sweeping, and changing bin bags.

Quick response to any incident

Curbelo insisted that the service is designed to respond quickly and effectively to any incidents that may occur, especially during the summer, a period in which thousands of weekly spots are offered for travel to the island. “In this way, quick and effective attention is guaranteed for any incidents that may occur on the island roads,” he added.

Among the work carried out are the repair of damaged elements, work on traffic lights, installation of vertical signs, and the installation of metal-wood barriers on the CV-12. Painting of railings and curbs has also been carried out.

Additionally, the operation addresses incidents reported through the Insular Operational Coordination Centre of La Gomera (CECOPIN), such as assistance in traffic accidents, removal of stones and other materials from the roads, removal of dead animals, and other situations affecting road safety.

A summer with more traffic and more safety

The reinforcement of the operation comes at a key moment for the island, which multiplies its floating population during the summer months. Residents and visitors will be able to travel with greater peace of mind knowing that the roads are being constantly monitored and maintained. The investment of €3.5 million not only guarantees safety but also contributes to the image of an island that bets on the quality of its infrastructure.

For the Gomero reader, this news is a relief: the roads will be in better condition to cope with the increase in traffic, and any incidents will be resolved quickly. Moreover, the cleaning and conservation work improves the environment of the roads, something that both residents and tourists exploring the island will appreciate.
