The Association of Entrepreneurs and Traders of La Gomera (AEG) has presented Silbo, an artificial intelligence platform for freelancers, SMEs, and entrepreneurs on the island. The tool, funded by European funds, aims to democratise access to AI.

The Association of Entrepreneurs and Traders of La Gomera (AEG) has launched Silbo, an artificial intelligence platform designed for freelancers, shops, and small businesses on the island to make the digital leap. The tool, presented on July 8, has been operational since that date on the website www.soysilbo.com.

The project is part of the Canarias Intelligent Commercial Destination programme, driven by the Department of Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands and co-financed with European FEDER funds. Its goal is to bring artificial intelligence closer to local commerce to improve competitiveness in an increasingly digitalised environment.

A platform for the digital transformation of Gomera commerce

Silbo offers an intuitive environment where users can receive AI assistance to resolve queries, generate content, improve customer service, or design communication strategies. All of this is tailored to the specific needs of each business, regardless of its size or previous level of digitalisation.

Fernando Morales, manager of AEG, has highlighted that

“Artificial Intelligence is no longer a technology of the future, but an essential tool for improving the competitiveness of any business. With Silbo, we want Gomera companies to access this opportunity in a simple, useful, and adapted way to their reality.”

The platform is designed so that any shop, from a small neighbourhood store to a digital entrepreneur, can save time and optimise processes. Until now, such tools have usually been reserved for large organisations with technical and economic resources.

Institutional support and connection to Gomera culture

The name Silbo pays homage to the Silbo Gomero, a whistled language declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Just as this ancestral communication system has served for centuries to connect the inhabitants of La Gomera, the new platform aspires to be an intelligent communication channel between technology and the island's businesses.

The first vice-president of the Insular Council of La Gomera, Adasat Reyes, has emphasised that

“the incorporation of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, in the productive and commercial processes of companies, both large and small, is essential to advance competitiveness, efficiency, and innovation.”
He added that the insular institution will continue to support businesses in this transformation process.

For his part, the deputy minister of Industry, Commerce, and Consumption of the Government of the Canary Islands, Felipe Afonso El Jaber, has stated that

“we firmly support projects like Silbo because we believe in a development model that does not leave behind our shops, our consumers, or our territories.”
Afonso defended that digitalisation must be accompanied by training and support so that Canary Island businesses gain competitiveness.

A boost for local commerce in La Gomera

The launch of Silbo is part of a set of actions by the AEG to modernise local commerce and consolidate a more innovative and resilient business ecosystem. The tool is available free of charge to all shops and freelancers on the island, who only need to register on the website to start using it.

The project is funded by European funds from the Canarias FEDER 2021-2027 programme, through the General Directorate of Commerce and Consumption of the Government of the Canary Islands. For Gomera traders, this represents an opportunity to access cutting-edge technology at no cost, at a time when digitalisation is no longer an option but a necessity.

Those interested can obtain more information and register on the platform through the official website. The AEG plans to organise training sessions in the coming months to facilitate the use of the tool and address queries.
