The designer based in La Gomera, Beatriz Fernández Barahona, has created nine vests and two handmade ceremonial collars that fuse haute couture and jewellery. The pieces will be presented on July 25 at the 'La Gomera. Fashion and Magic' runway in Valle Gran Rey.
A total of nine vests and two ceremonial collars, entirely hand-stitched, make up the new collection of Alhaja Art Couture, the brand of Beatriz Fernández Barahona. The creator, who resides in La Gomera, has used top-quality suede and natural elements such as cowries, shells, red coral, and semi-precious stones to bring to life pieces she describes as "unique".
A collection inspired by the sea and mountains
The proposal, named "Sea, Islands and Mountains", is structured around six base patterns, each with two variations: Elixir, Inti, Alma, Alas, and Om, four feminine and one masculine, plus a unisex ceremonial collar. "This collection does not start from a prior design or a fixed idea. Inspiration arises as I progress with the garment," explains Fernández Barahona.
Earth, sea, blood, and bone tones prevail in the compositions, where turquoise, lapis lazuli, carnelian, quartz, and agate are integrated. The designer asserts that "each vest is unique" and that intuition guides the creative path.
A career linked to the craft
With 36 years of experience, Fernández Barahona is a theatre costume designer, pattern maker, and stylist. She has collaborated with companies such as Teatro del Temple, Los McClown, and the Dramatic Centre of Aragón, and has worked in film, short films, and documentaries. "I have seen how the actor transforms when dressed. The costume envelops and enhances you," she notes.
The brand is also expanding its offering with a new line of leather goods and jewellery, broadening the Alhaja Art Couture universe.
Presentation at the 'La Gomera. Fashion and Magic' runway
The pieces will be showcased on July 25 at the Puerto de Vueltas in Valle Gran Rey, as part of the second edition of the runway organised by the island council. The designer will be one of about fifteen creators presenting their works, the result of months of training and effort.
