The Vallehermoso City Council has welcomed the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing and the Spanish Mountain Running Team, who are starting an official concentration in La Gomera ahead of the 2026 Skyrunning World Championship.
The municipality of Vallehermoso has become the headquarters of the elite Spanish skyrunning team since Thursday. The Spanish Mountain Running Team has begun an official concentration on the island to prepare for the 2026 Skyrunning World Championship, which will take place in La Gomera from September 17 to 20.
Institutional Reception at the City Council
The day began with an event in the Plenary Hall of the Vallehermoso City Council, where the mayor, Emiliano Coello, welcomed the delegation alongside members of the governing group. During the meeting, the organisational details of the championship and the role of the municipality in the world event were discussed.
Coello highlighted that
“it is an honour to welcome the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing and the Spanish Team in our municipality. Hosting the Skyrunning World Championship represents an exceptional opportunity to project Vallehermoso internationally and demonstrate our capacity to host major sporting events in a unique natural environment.”
Vallehermoso, Epicentre of the Toughest Events
The municipality will not only be a transit point: it will be the stage for two of the most demanding events of the championship. The Ultra Sky, at 61 kilometres, and the Miel de Palma Sky Marathon will start from Vallehermoso, while the Plaza de la Constitución will host the Life Base of the Ultra Sky, a crucial point for assisting the runners.
For the locals, this means that during those days the municipality will become the operational centre of an event that will bring together the best national teams from around the world. Traffic and activity in the square will increase, but so will tourism and economic projection.
Training on the Real Terrain
The concentration of the Spanish Team will allow athletes to familiarise themselves with the terrain and adapt to the island's conditions more than two months before the competition. They will conduct training sessions on the same routes that will host the championship, giving them a competitive advantage.
The La Gomera Paradise Skyrunning World Championships 2026 will place Vallehermoso on the international map of mountain sports. For trail and skyrunning enthusiasts in the Canary Islands, it is an opportunity to see the world's best runners in action in a spectacular setting like the Garajonay National Park and its surroundings.
The event will take place from September 17 to 20, and the island is expected to welcome hundreds of athletes and visitors. Those interested in following the competition or participating as volunteers can check the official championship website.
