The theatre group Los de Denantes premiered 'Cosas que pasaron después del volcán' in Fuencaliente, a tribute to the resilience of the locals after the Tajogaite eruption. The performance, part of the Meeting of Winemakers, combined humour and hope.
Last weekend, the municipality of Fuencaliente was the setting for an event that was much more than just a simple theatrical performance. The group Los de Denantes staged 'Cosas que pasaron después del volcán', a customary play that has managed to connect with the audience through its portrayal of daily life after the Tajogaite volcano eruption in 2021.
A play written by a winemaker
The theatrical piece was written and directed by Roberto Camacho, a winemaker and member of the Regulatory Council of the DOP Vinos La Palma. Camacho, who knows firsthand the difficulties faced by the agricultural sector after the disaster, decided to capture in the dialogues the anecdotes and emotions experienced by the residents of the affected areas.
The cast was made up of women from the region, mostly retirees, who naturally portrayed scenes based on real events. Their performance conveyed a message of closeness and hope, eliciting smiles and applause from the audience.
Wine and theatre: shared roots
The performance was part of the Meeting of Winemakers, held at Bodegas Llanovid. This event brought together professionals and wine enthusiasts from different islands of the archipelago, aiming to highlight the viticultural and cultural heritage of the Canary Islands.
During the day, participants agreed that theatre and wine share the same origin in La Palma: both arise from the land, from the people, and from the desire to keep traditions alive. The play served as a metaphor for the resilience that defines the island.
Inter-island participation and institutional support
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Amigos del Queso y del Vino de Lanzarote association, the Avitame association from Gran Canaria, and winemakers from the Denominación de Origen Protegida Vinos La Palma. The organisation was managed by the Regulatory Council of the DOP Vinos La Palma, with the collaboration of the Cabildo de La Palma and the Town Hall of Fuencaliente.
For the residents of Fuencaliente and the entire island, such initiatives not only strengthen the social fabric but also demonstrate that culture and the primary sector can walk hand in hand. The play 'Cosas que pasaron después del volcán' stands as an example of how art can be a vehicle for collective healing.
Those who missed the premiere still have the chance to enjoy it: the group plans to repeat the performance in other municipalities of La Palma in the coming weeks. Dates will be announced through the social media of the Regulatory Council and the Town Hall of Fuencaliente.
