A malfunction in a sewage pipe on Tajaraste Street caused the flooding of several homes in Arrecife, forcing the intervention of the Security and Emergency Consortium and the Local Police.
The burst sewage pipe on Tajaraste Street, in the Central Park of Arrecife, caused a flood on Wednesday that affected several homes in the area. The incident, which occurred in the morning, mobilised the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Security and Emergency Consortium, as well as the Local Police, who arrived at the scene to control the situation and assist residents.
According to sources from the Consortium, the malfunction generated strong pressure that caused the sewage to be expelled several metres high. Driven by the wind, it reached the rooftops of two nearby buildings, causing water to enter several properties. The Consortium's personnel managed to access the rooftop of the building located at 12 Campoamor Street once the pipe lost pressure.
There, firefighters found that water was descending through the stairwell because the downpipes from the roof were completely blocked by solid debris from the sewage. To facilitate drainage, they removed the covers from the downpipes and pumped out the accumulated water on the rooftop. Subsequently, they inspected the affected homes to assess the extent of the damage.
Most of the properties had little water accumulation inside, according to the same sources. However, a home located on Folías Street was particularly affected as the cistern was flooded, raising concerns among residents about potential structural damage and the loss of stored water.
The Local Police remained on site to assist those affected and manage possible alternative accommodations for those unable to return to their homes. Municipal workers proceeded to cordon off the area to ensure safety while cleaning and repairing the pipe.
The incident has highlighted the need to maintain the sanitation infrastructure in the city. Neighbours in the area have expressed their dissatisfaction with the frequency of such malfunctions, which affect quality of life and create emergency situations. Sources consulted from the Town Hall assure that the causes of the burst will be investigated and measures will be taken to prevent it from happening again.
For the moment, repair work continues, and it is expected that normalcy will be restored in the area in the coming hours. The Security and Emergency Consortium recommends that residents keep rooftops clean and downpipes clear to avoid blockages that could worsen such incidents.
