The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, received the representatives of Academy Solidario, an initiative that uses chess as a tool for integration and education for children and youth in the municipality.
The Academy Solidario project, which combines chess with training and social action, continues to expand across Telde. Its aim is to reach more children and young people in the municipality, using the game as a vehicle to convey values such as effort, discipline, and equal opportunities.
On Tuesday, the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, welcomed Roberto Rivero and Cathaisa Benítez, representatives of the initiative, at the Town Hall. During the meeting, the project leaders expressed their gratitude to the City Council for its support and commitment to a proposal that is gaining presence among the citizens.
As Rivero and Benítez explained, institutional support is key to continuing to develop an activity that goes beyond sport. Chess, they noted, fosters concentration, patience, and decision-making, skills they consider fundamental for the personal development of the participants.
The municipal leader praised the work of Academy Solidario and emphasized the importance of supporting projects with social impact.
“When an initiative is born with a solidary, educational, and supportive vocation for our children and youth, the City Council must be close and lend a hand. Academy Solidario represents much more than a sporting activity; it is a project that conveys values, creates opportunities, and helps to build a more participative and cohesive society,” Peña stated.
The mayor added that chess is an extraordinary tool for personal development, as it fosters the ability to think, make decisions, exercise patience, and respect others.
“But the most important thing is the human component behind this project, with committed individuals who dedicate their time and effort to help others,” he highlighted.
Peña insisted that Telde needs initiatives that contribute and work for the present and future of young people.
“From the City Council, we will continue to support those projects that add value and have a clear social dimension,” he assured.
The meeting also served to advance new lines of collaboration. The goal is to strengthen the presence of Academy Solidario in the municipality so that more people can benefit from its activities.
Currently, the project is already operating in several locations in Telde, and there are plans to expand its reach in the coming months. The activities are aimed at children and young people in vulnerable situations, although they are also open to any minor interested in learning chess and developing social skills.
Academy Solidario thus joins other local initiatives that seek integration through sport and education. Chess, in particular, has proven to be an effective tool for improving academic performance and coexistence, according to various studies.
For the project leaders, the meeting with the mayor represents a boost to their work. “The support from the City Council gives us visibility and allows us to reach more families,” they stated. The collaboration includes the provision of municipal spaces and the dissemination of activities.
The Telde City Council, for its part, reaffirms its commitment to social projects that complement educational work and promote citizen participation. The Department of Education and Social Services will closely monitor the evolution of Academy Solidario to assess possible expansions.
