The municipal council of Telde will vote on naming the Occupational Centre 'Gregoria González Valerón', a tribute to the historic councillor and cultural activist who passed away in 2025.
The Telde City Council will take the next step to make the recognition of Gregoria González Valerón, affectionately known as Yoya, permanent by bringing the proposal to name the Occupational Centre after her to the municipal council. The vote will take place after the file has completed all its administrative processing, including a public consultation period without objections.
The initiative originated from the Department of Culture, led by Juan Martel, at the request of the Department of Education, and had the necessary technical reports. During the public information process, no alternative proposals or objections were presented, which paves the way for its final approval.
The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, was the one who personally communicated the proposal to Gregoria González Valerón while she was still alive. She received the news with emotion and gratitude, as the mayor recalls. Yoya passed away on August 29, 2025, but she was able to know in her lifetime that the centre bearing her name would become a reality.
“Tributes have a special meaning when they come in time, when the people who have given part of their lives to the city can feel that recognition,” noted Juan Antonio Peña.
The mayor highlighted that during this term, Gregoria experienced two important moments: the granting of the Medal for Cultural Merit of Telde in 2023 and the approval of the file for the Occupational Centre to bear her name. “We are taking another step to make something that Yoya already knew in life a reality, and that she received with emotion. The sadness of her loss remains, but there is also the satisfaction of knowing that she felt the love of her city,” he added.
The councillor for Culture, Juan Martel, emphasised that a space dedicated to the inclusion and support of people with disabilities will carry the name of Gregoria González Valerón. “It is a recognition of a woman linked to the culture and education of Telde, who made helping others a way of life,” he underlined.
Gregoria González Valerón served as a councillor for the Telde City Council for several terms, with responsibilities in Education, Culture, and Local Development. Her career made her a reference for her closeness, sensitivity, and public service vocation. The Medal for Cultural Merit, awarded in 2023, had already recognised her cultural activity and commitment to the city.
The Occupational Centre of Telde is a key municipal resource for the training, support, and promotion of autonomy for people with disabilities. With the new name, the centre will forever be linked to a woman who dedicated her life to education and culture.
The plenary approval will mark the culmination of a process born from collective affection. Telde will thus make permanent a recognition that Gregoria González Valerón already received in her lifetime, which will now be engraved in one of its most emblematic facilities.
The municipal council is expected to give the green light to the agreement in the coming weeks, after which the official signage of the centre with the name Gregoria González Valerón will proceed.
