The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, and the sports councillor, Alberto Santana, visited the young athletes on Tuesday. Football, basketball, and kayaking are some of the activities offered.
More than 800 boys and girls are participating this summer in the multi-sport camps organised by the Municipal Sports Service of Agüimes, in collaboration with several local clubs. The initiative, which has become one of the most anticipated summer proposals, offers activities ranging from football to kayaking, spread across various facilities in the municipality.
The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, and the sports councillor, Alberto Santana, visited the young athletes on Tuesday to encourage them to maintain healthy habits. During the tour, they were able to witness firsthand the atmosphere of camaraderie and effort that permeates each camp.
A total of 650 places have been made available, but since many camps allow registration by the week, the final number of participants exceeds 800. The largest group is football at Cruce de Arinaga, with 207 registered. This is followed by basketball at the Polideportivo de Arinaga, with 100 participants; football in Arinaga, with 68; kayaking at Arinaga beach, with 65; and volleyball in Montaña de Los Vélez, with 64.
Other camps that have been well received include those at the Hydrotherapy Centre (30 places), Agüidiviértete (21), football in Agüimes (19), futsal at Cruce de Arinaga (25), and futsal in Agüimes (19). The variety of disciplines aims to attract children with different interests and ages, promoting sports practice from an early age.
Beyond entertainment, the camps have become a key resource for family reconciliation during school holidays. Many families find in this offer a solution for their children to be occupied while they work, in a safe environment supervised by qualified monitors.
The initiative also promotes values such as teamwork, respect, and cooperation. The monitors, mostly young people from the municipality, are responsible for conveying these principles through dynamics and games, creating an environment of learning and fun.
The mayor, Óscar Hernández, highlighted the importance of these activities for the comprehensive development of minors. "It's not just about playing sports, but about learning to coexist, to strive, and to respect others," he noted during the visit. For his part, the sports councillor, Alberto Santana, appreciated the coordinated work with local clubs: "Thanks to their involvement, we can offer a varied and quality programme."
The camps take place throughout July and August, with schedules adapted to the needs of families. Registrations are made through the Municipal Sports Service, and there are still places available in some disciplines.
