The fire broke out shortly after four in the morning in the semi-basement of the hotel complex in Costa Teguise. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames after ventilating the area and disconnecting the electricity supply.

Early on Tuesday, July 14, a scare occurred at the Sands Beach Resort Hotel in Costa Teguise when a fire declared in its laundry forced the mobilization of firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium. The alert, received at 04:21 hours, warned of a thick column of black smoke coming from the semi-basement of the establishment.

Quick intervention by emergency services

The hotel’s security guard was the one who raised the alarm to the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a large amount of accumulated smoke, so the first priority was to ventilate the area to safely access it. Two urban fire engines were dispatched from the main base along with a support vehicle from the North base, as well as Civil Guard agents who assisted in the intervention.

The guard was waiting at the main entrance to guide the responders to the source of the fire. Once located, the firefighters proceeded to disconnect the electricity supply from the main panel before tackling the flames.

The fire affected wiring and electric motors

According to the Emergency Consortium, the fire concentrated on an area of approximately one square metre, where electrical wiring, motors, and other laundry equipment were damaged. The quick action prevented the flames from spreading to the rest of the hotel complex, which during the high season accommodates numerous tourists.

The extinguishing was carried out by applying water, and after putting out the fire, the firefighters continued with the ventilation of the affected areas to eliminate smoke residues. Additionally, the area was inspected to rule out hot spots that could reignite the incident.

No personal injuries or impact on guests

Fortunately, the fire did not result in any injuries nor did it require the evacuation of hotel guests. The incident, which could have had more serious consequences, resulted only in material damage to the laundry. For the residents of Lanzarote, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining electrical installations in tourist establishments, especially on an island where the hotel sector is key to the local economy.

The Sands Beach Resort Hotel, one of the most well-known accommodations in Costa Teguise, resumed its activities normally after the early hours of the morning. Firefighters declared the intervention over after ensuring there was no risk of re-ignition.
