The Ministry for Ecological Transition begins on August 4 the expropriation process of more than 150 plots in Tías and Yaiza for the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. The meetings will last until August 7.

On August 4, the expropriation process of more than 150 plots in the municipalities of Tías and Yaiza will commence, necessary for the expansion of the regional wastewater treatment plant. The General Directorate of Water of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has summoned the affected owners to formalise the occupation records, a decisive step after months of processing.

The meetings will be held in premises provided by the municipalities, as occurred in a first round of contacts. On August 4, it will be the turn of those affected in Yaiza and some in Tías; on the 5th, 6th, and 7th, only the owners of Tías will be attended to.

What is being expropriated and how compensation is determined

In the meetings, the exact area of each expropriation, measured in square metres, will be agreed upon. Easements for pipelines and temporary occupations will also be established. Most of the affected land is classified as pasture, although there is an industrial plot in Tías and several undeveloped plots or those intended for communication routes.

The owners will receive financial compensation based on the cadastral value and the use of the land. The Ministry has published the list of affected individuals and legal entities, although in some plots the identification of the owner is still pending.

The works are underway

The expansion of the wastewater treatment plant has already been awarded. The contract was divided into two lots: the expansion and modernisation works, carried out by Obrascón Huarte Laín for 14.31 million euros with an execution period of two and a half years; and the conduits and pumping from Puerto Calero, awarded to Imesapi for 4.75 million, with a period of a year and a half. Additionally, the control and monitoring of the works has been contracted for 724,000 euros.

If the deadlines are met, the Tías treatment plant will reach a treatment capacity of 12,000 cubic metres per day starting in 2029, compared to the current 8,000. This will allow service to the growing demand of the tourist and residential area in southern Lanzarote.

What it means for residents

For the residents of Tías and Yaiza, the expansion implies an improvement in wastewater management, key for urban and tourist development. The works will generate employment during their execution and, in the long term, will ensure the treatment capacity in the face of seasonal population growth. The owners of the expropriated plots will receive compensation that will need to be negotiated in the August meetings.

The Ministry expects to have the agreements finalised in the short term, almost in parallel with the start of the works. The public company Acuaes coordinates the work, which will begin once the occupation records are formalised.

For any questions, those affected can consult the documentation at the municipalities of Tías and Yaiza or on the Ministry's electronic headquarters.
