Candelaria concluded this Sunday the festivities in honour of Santa Ana and the Virgin of Carmen with the procession of the images of Santa Ana and San Joaquín through the streets of the municipality.
The Tenerife town of Candelaria experienced the closing day of its patronal festivities dedicated to Santa Ana and the Virgin of Carmen on Sunday, July 26. The highlight was the traditional procession of the images of Santa Ana and San Joaquín, which traversed several streets of the urban area.
Before the start of the procession at 20:00, a Eucharist was held to pay tribute to the elderly of the municipality. The ceremony was officiated by Víctor Manuel Fernández, parish priest of San Fernando Rey in Santiago del Teide, and Dailos José Melo González, parish priest of Santa Ana in Candelaria.
After the mass, the images of Santa Ana and San Joaquín were taken to the Plaza de Santa Ana, where the Agrupación Folclórica Santa Ana-San Blas performed the hymn to Santa Ana. Following this, the procession began its route through the streets Isla de Tenerife, Santa Ana, La Cardonera, and Juan El Cape-Pescador.
One of the most emotional moments of the procession took place on Juan El Cape-Pescador street, where the neighbours had created salt carpets to decorate the path. This initiative, the result of collective effort, once again filled that section of the route with colour and tradition, as has been customary during the festivities.
The ecclesiastical representation was led by the parish priests Dailos José Melo González and Víctor Manuel Fernández, who walked behind the image of the patroness. Behind them, the councillor for Urban Planning, Reinaldo Triviño, carried the municipal banner, followed by the Municipal Corporation presided over by the mayor, Mari Brito. The Banda Las Candelas, the Local Police in formal attire, and numerous faithful accompanied the procession.
Upon the arrival of the procession at the Plaza de Santa Ana, a fireworks display lit up the sky to conclude the procession. Subsequently, the performance by singer Fernando Lugo marked the end of this year's patronal festivities.
The mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, highlighted that “the festivities of Santa Ana and the Virgin of Carmen represent days of coexistence, reunion, and unity for the residents of the municipality.” In her statements, she thanked all the individuals and groups who made the festive events possible, especially the neighbours, the Local Police, the Civil Protection volunteers, municipal staff, the bearers of the images, the Banda de Las Candelas, and the participating associations and groups, whose commitment contributed to the success of the programme.
The patronal festivities of Santa Ana and the Virgin of Carmen are one of the most significant events on Candelaria's festive calendar. Over several days, the municipality hosts religious, cultural, and leisure activities that bring together residents and visitors. The procession on the final day is the culminating moment, and the creation of salt carpets has become a hallmark of the celebration.
For next year, the City Council is already working on organising new festivities that keep traditions alive and promote citizen participation. Neighbourhood involvement, as seen this year, remains key to the success of these events.
