San Cristóbal de La Laguna recorded the highest temperature in Tenerife this Sunday, with 32.9 degrees in Llano de los Loros, according to the latest update from Aemet. In Gran Canaria, San Bartolomé de Tirajana tops the regional ranking with 36.9 degrees.
The Llano de los Loros station in San Cristóbal de La Laguna registered 32.9 degrees at 13:20 this Sunday, making it the hottest spot in Tenerife according to the latest update from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). This figure is part of the official summary released at 15:22, which identifies this area in the north of the island as the 'oven' of Tenerife for the day.
Across the archipelago, temperatures soared to 36.9 degrees in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, at the Las Tirajanas station (Gran Canaria), recorded at 12:10. Following closely are Tejeda, with 34.9 degrees, and two more locations in the same Gran Canaria municipality: Lomo Pedro Afonso (34.4) and Cuevas del Pinar (33.1).
Heat felt on the beaches
The episode of high temperatures has drawn hundreds of people to the beaches of Tenerife, such as Las Teresitas or Abades, which have seen a high influx since mid-morning. The combination of clear skies, rising temperatures, and the weekend has created a fully summery atmosphere along the coast.
For the residents of La Laguna, the heat has not been an excuse to stay indoors: many have chosen to seek refreshment in nearby bathing areas or urban parks, although the mercury has not relented in the interior of the municipality.
Active forest fire alert
The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a state of alert for the risk of forest fires in Gran Canaria and Tenerife since 08:00 this Sunday. This measure responds to the weather forecast, environmental dryness, and terrain conditions, which increase the fire risk in areas with dry vegetation.
Emergency services remind that it is prohibited to throw cigarette butts, use machinery that generates sparks, or make fires outside of authorized spaces. The alert particularly affects the midlands and summits, where the thermal rise is more pronounced and the relative humidity is low.
Light haze and moderate wind
Aemet forecasts generally few clouds or clear skies for the remainder of Sunday, except for cloudy intervals in low areas of the north during early and late hours. Additionally, light haze is expected at altitude over the eastern islands, which will extend in the afternoon to Tenerife and La Gomera.
The wind will blow from the north, moderate, with strong intervals at night in Jandía and on the east and west coasts of the mountainous islands. Temperatures will continue to rise slightly, with maximums potentially reaching 30 degrees in many inland areas, although less likely in La Palma and El Hierro.
For the coming days, thermometers could remain elevated, especially in the midlands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Aemet recommends following updates and taking precautions against the heat and fire risk. Meanwhile, residents of La Laguna who have not been able to escape to the beach will have to endure an atmosphere more typical of August than early July.
