The La Laguna City Council has opened a new calisthenics park in Bajamar, responding to community requests. The facility, located next to the Javier Lucea promenade, features artificial grass flooring for added safety.
The new sports space, managed by the Autonomous Sports Organization (OAD), adds to the network of outdoor facilities in the municipality. Bajamar now has a calisthenics park that includes bars, rings, and other elements for bodyweight exercises.
The councillor and president of the OAD, Badel Albelo, highlighted that the initiative responds to requests from the coastal community. "In recent years, we have made a significant effort to modernize this type of facility," he stated during the inauguration.
A community demand met
The facility is located next to the Javier Lucea promenade, a highly frequented pedestrian area. The City Council has installed artificial grass flooring to cushion potential falls, as Albelo explained: "Artificial grass flooring has also been installed to meet safety standards."
The councillor emphasized that calisthenics "has always been well received among the people of La Laguna, but we have recently observed an increase in interest and demand for this type of facility from younger people in all our districts."
"We must make an additional effort and provide the residents of Bajamar with parks of this type, which not only contribute to health and well-being but also help improve functional strength, physical agility, and muscle control," Badel Albelo noted.
More outdoor sports in La Laguna
With this opening, La Laguna expands its offering of outdoor sports facilities, which includes other calisthenics parks in different neighbourhoods. The goal of the City Council is to "bring sports closer to all neighbourhoods and towns in the municipality," according to Albelo.
Calisthenics is a discipline that uses body weight to perform strength and flexibility exercises, and it has gained popularity among young people. The new park allows for complete routines without the need for weights or machines.
Residents of Bajamar can now enjoy this space for free, at their leisure. The facility adds to other points along the coastal area of La Laguna that promote outdoor physical activity, such as the promenade and sports courts.
For the councillor, this infrastructure "not only contributes to health and well-being but also helps improve functional strength, physical agility, and muscle control, in addition to reducing the risk of injuries in the future."
