La Laguna City Council has opened to the public La Frescura park in Los Baldíos, a 1,150 square metre space with playgrounds, relaxation areas, and extensive green areas that responds to a historic demand from residents.
The Los Baldíos area in La Laguna now has a new public space for gathering and outdoor leisure. The City Council has opened La Frescura park, a green area of approximately 1,150 square metres located next to the Citizen Centre, transforming a plot that had previously remained underutilised. This initiative was a long-standing demand from local residents, who for years called for a place where families could gather and children could play safely.
The acting mayor and councillor for Sports, Badel Albelo, highlighted that the opening of this park is "excellent news for Los Baldíos and for all families in the area." In statements made during the inauguration, Albelo emphasised that the space "was requested by residents for many years" and that today it becomes a reality for the enjoyment of the entire community. The councillor reiterated the council's commitment to continue improving the towns and neighbourhoods of the municipality with initiatives that contribute to the well-being and quality of life of residents.
For his part, the councillor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández, explained that the project arose from listening to the residents of Los Baldíos. "For years they had been calling for a space where families could gather, where children could play safely, and where our elderly could find a pleasant place to walk, rest, and share," Hernández pointed out, adding that "today that demand is a reality" and that this is the best way to continue building community.
The new park includes a large relaxation area designed as a neighbourhood meeting point, with urban furniture and shaded spaces arranged around a design inspired by a tagoror, the traditional meeting space of the ancient Canarians, which promotes coexistence and social use of the area. Additionally, it features internal pathways that connect the various spaces and improve accessibility between the park and the Citizen Centre.
Hernández wanted to emphasise that the space is designed for people: "We wanted to create a space designed for people, where nature, accessibility, and coexistence are the main features." The councillor highlighted that the park not only incorporates new leisure areas but also recovers a space to serve the community and contribute to improving the quality of life in Los Baldíos.
The facility also includes a children's playground equipped with a large set of natural Robinia wood games, consisting of towers, walkways, climbing areas, balance elements, two slides, a nest swing, and seesaws, all on safety cushioning flooring. The area also includes a space designated for the installation of biosaludable elements and significant landscaping work that enhances the green character of the surroundings.
The intervention has included the creation of extensive landscaped areas, the preservation of existing trees of higher value, the planting of new trees and ornamental species, the installation of an automated irrigation system, new urban furniture, protective fencing, and various measures aimed at improving safety and the landscape integration of the environment. The plant design incorporates around 520 specimens belonging to 52 different species, creating a greener, more sustainable, and comfortable park for its users.
With this initiative, La Laguna City Council continues to strengthen the municipal network of public spaces dedicated to leisure, coexistence, and contact with nature. Los Baldíos thus unveils a new infrastructure that enhances the daily life of the neighbourhood and responds to a long-awaited community demand. Residents can now enjoy this new space, which remains open to the public at free hours.
