The venue of the Afilarmónica Triqui Traques, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, became a hub of solidarity this weekend. The food, medicine, and essential products collection campaign for those affected by the earthquakes in Venezuela concluded with a result that the organisers describe as extraordinary.
The initiative, driven by Alfonso Bermúdez and supported by the historic carnival group, managed to mobilise dozens of locals who came to donate. Throughout the day, the venue was filled with boxes and bags of essential products that will be sent to the hardest-hit areas by the earthquake.
“Canary Islands and Venezuela are one. Tons of love and solidarity. Venezuela, you are not alone,” Bermúdez wrote on his social media after the collection ended. The organiser wanted to publicly thank the support received, especially from the Afilarmónica Triqui Traques, which provided its space and mobilised its members.
In another post, Bermúdez highlighted that “the Canary people are wonderful” and thanked the involvement of volunteers, collaborators, and anonymous citizens. The donations included non-perishable food, medicines, diapers, powdered milk, and other essential items.
Among the images shared by the organiser, the presence of several children wearing T-shirts in the colours of Venezuela stood out. “For these reasons, one gives everything in this aid. They have never been to Venezuela, but they carry it in their blood,” an emotional Bermúdez pointed out, emphasising the importance of transmitting solidarity to new generations.
The campaign once again highlights the social commitment of the Tenerife Carnival, beyond its festive aspect. Carnival groups and collectives have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to mobilise for charitable causes, and this has been no exception.
The earthquakes that shook Venezuela in recent weeks have left thousands of victims and severe material damage, especially in the coastal states. The Canary community, historically linked to the South American country, has responded with multiple aid initiatives.
The organisers have confirmed that everything collected will be sent through humanitarian channels to ensure it reaches the families that need it most. Although an exact figure of collected kilos has not been provided, sources close to the campaign speak of “tons” of products.
The Afilarmónica Triqui Traques, one of the most emblematic groups of the chicharrero Carnival, has been key to the success of the collection. Its venue, located in the heart of Santa Cruz, became an improvised logistics centre for hours where dozens of volunteers sorted and packaged the donations.
The charitable gesture has been widely applauded on social media, where numerous users have shared Bermúdez's posts and congratulated the organisation. “This is the true spirit of the Carnival,” commented a user on Facebook.
For those who want to continue collaborating, the organisers have announced that they will consider the possibility of opening new collection points in other municipalities on the island, although for the moment the campaign is concluded with a more than positive balance.
