The Town Hall of Antigua, presided over by Juan Cabrera, will present a credit modification to the plenary on 31 July to incorporate eight million in reserves into the budget. The largest allocation, of five million, will be dedicated to a road surfacing plan in several localities of the municipality.
The new governing group of Antigua, led by Mayor Juan Cabrera, has announced an ambitious investment plan amounting to eight million euros, financed with treasury reserves. The proposal will be submitted to the ordinary plenary on 31 July, as reported by the councillor for Urbanism, David Alberto.
The largest allocation, of five million euros, will be used for a road surfacing plan that will take place in Caleta de Fuste, Costa de Antigua, Triquivijate, and the town centre of Antigua. David Alberto explained that the projects have already been commissioned and that the local government intends to start the works before the end of the year, once the budget modification is approved and the contracting procedures are completed.
The councillor detailed that the aim is to address the roads that are in the worst condition and subsequently continue with new phases of surfacing in other towns of the municipality and in rural roads. The initiative responds to a long-standing demand from residents, who have been calling for improvements to the pavement on various streets for years.
Additionally, the credit modification will allocate around 2.2 million euros to comprehensively renovate seven playgrounds located in Caleta de Fuste, Antigua, Agua de Bueyes, and Valles de Ortega. The actions will allow for the replacement of obsolete facilities with new play areas equipped with more modern equipment and materials, compliant with current safety regulations.
David Alberto provided an overview of the first month of management of the new governing group and defended that collaboration with other administrations has allowed for the unlocking of actions that had been pending. Among them, he highlighted the incorporation of the Canary Police into the municipality, with joint operations alongside the Civil Guard and the Local Police, especially in Caleta de Fuste.
The councillor also referred to the new bus stop established in the industrial estate of Costa de Antigua, an action he described as historic for workers and businesses in the area. As he explained, it was made possible after the Town Hall authorised an intervention by the Cabildo that had been pending. This institutional collaboration will also allow progress in the transfer of land for the construction of the future clean point in the industrial estate.
In Caleta de Fuste, the Town Hall is also working on the establishment of a provisional parking area in the space previously occupied by an old sports court and an obsolete playground, next to the abandoned tourist complex, Caleta Garden. The aim, he stated, is to increase parking spaces and improve safety in the area while promoting the final project planned for the plot located next to the Castle roundabout. There, the construction of a parking facility with two underground levels is contemplated, in a project that is still to be specified but is included in the Modernisation Plans.
David Alberto also assured that the governing group will maintain support for the primary sector and is seeking water to meet the demand of professionals. Furthermore, he announced that the corporation is working in parallel with the Government of the Canary Islands to promote two strategic projects for the municipality: the sanitation of Salinas del Carmen and Pozo Negro, and the future Dotational Centre in the heart of the town of Antigua.
In health matters, the councillor explained that the Town Hall continues to process the transfer of land for the future health centre in Caleta de Fuste and the necessary procedures to enable the expansion of the health centre in Antigua, an action considered essential to implement the 24-hour Emergency service.
David Alberto concluded by asserting that the new governing group wants to demonstrate with actions that "the change was worth it" and that there is "another way of governing," based on dialogue, consensus, and collaboration with other administrations to expedite projects and investments for the benefit of the municipality. The residents of Antigua will be able to closely follow the progress of these projects through municipal channels and the upcoming plenary sessions.
