The most important ocean film festival in Europe lands in Corralejo (La Oliva) this Sunday, July 12. After filling Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna, it arrives with five stories from four continents.
The International Ocean Film Tour, regarded as the most significant ocean film festival in Europe, arrives this Sunday, July 12, at the Municipal Auditorium of Corralejo, in the municipality of La Oliva. The event, which will start at 18:00, is part of Volume 12 of the festival, which has already sold out at its first two stops in the Canary Islands: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Paraninfo of the University of La Laguna in Tenerife.
Five true stories from Hawaii to South Africa
The programme of Volume 12 brings together productions from six countries across four continents. All of them tell true stories, without actors, narrated by their own protagonists. The first, 'Christa Funk: Passion for the Waves', portrays a sports photographer making her way in a traditionally male-dominated field by capturing the most extreme waves in Hawaii, such as Pipeline.
Next is 'The Last Dive', an emotional reunion of diver Terry Kennedy with Willy, a manta ray from the Mexican island of San Benedicto, whom he has known for over four decades. The film shows how nature can transform a life and awaken a commitment to marine conservation.
In 'A Different Beast', brothers Lachlan, Ewan, and Jamie Maclean face the challenge of rowing across the Pacific Ocean non-stop, on a nine-thousand-mile journey of endurance and camaraderie. The adrenaline kicks in with 'Up the Coast', where world kiteboarding champion Kevin Langeree travels the coast of South Africa in search of the perfect wind.
The festival concludes with 'Home is the Ocean', the story of the Schwörer family, who left Switzerland to live aboard a sailboat. For seven years, the eight members have travelled the world in just twenty square meters, showcasing an alternative way of understanding education, coexistence, and respect for the planet.
Free educational pass for the youth of La Oliva
In addition to the evening session open to the public, the festival has scheduled a free, closed morning educational pass aimed exclusively at the children of the municipality. This initiative seeks to raise marine awareness among new generations, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the festival.
The International Ocean Film Tour is supported in Spain by the Canary production company Kinema Producciones, which champions cinema as a tool for outreach and social awareness. The event in Fuerteventura is in collaboration with the La Oliva City Council, through its departments of Environment, Sports, and Culture, as well as the local organization Clean Ocean Project.
A tour that will cross borders and end in Jameos del Agua
After its stop in Fuerteventura, the festival will continue its tour through cities such as Málaga, Valencia, Barcelona, Bilbao, Gijón, Santander, Vigo, Madrid, Cartagena, Cádiz, and Palma, as well as crossing into Portugal to visit Lisbon, Porto, Figueira da Foz, and Setúbal. The grand finale will be in October at one of the most iconic spaces in the archipelago: the Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote.
For sea lovers who are left wanting more, the event in Corralejo is a unique opportunity to dive into stories that demonstrate the ocean is much more than a backdrop: it is a home, a challenge, and a source of inspiration. Tickets for the 18:00 session are already available on the festival's website. Those who cannot attend still have options at the upcoming stops on the tour.
