Rodrigo, Pájara wrestler, defeats leukaemia after eight months of treatment

Rodrigo Cabrera, 9 years old and a wrestler from CL Maxorata, has overcome leukaemia after eight months of treatment. His club sends a message about the need to donate marrow, blood, and platelets.

On May 13, Rodrigo Cabrera González, a native of Pájara and a wrestler from the CL Maxorata youth team, achieved the greatest victory of his life: defeating the leukaemia diagnosed in March 2024. He did this using one of his favourite techniques, a half-hip throw, but this time the opponent was not another wrestler, but a disease that kept him trapped for over a year.

Diagnosis and treatment in Gran Canaria

It all began on March 31, 2024, when his parents, Alejandro and Patricia, noticed that Rodrigo had a high fever that wouldn't go down. They took him to the Hospital Virgen de La Peña, where doctors diagnosed leukaemia. After an emergency blood transfusion, he was evacuated the next day to the Maternal and Child Hospital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

There, he received chemotherapy and remained hospitalised for months. Last May, at the Day Hospital, Rodrigo rang the bell that symbolises the end of medical treatment. He now faces monthly check-ups and eagerly awaits his final discharge.

Support from CL Maxorata and a call for donations

The CL Maxorata de Tarajalejo never left their young wrestler alone. The club has launched an emotional message about the importance of donating marrow, blood, and platelets to save lives. A few days ago, during a youth wrestling match between the majorero team and Tijarafe Guanche, they paid tribute to him: they gifted him a t-shirt signed by all the wrestlers.

Rodrigo's story is also that of his family, the Padilla Viera family, and a community that rallied from the very first moment. For the residents of Pájara and all of Fuerteventura, this news represents an example of strength and a reminder that solidarity can make a difference.

Rodrigo, with the calmness of a future cornerstone of Canarian wrestling, demonstrates that the values of this sport —trust, strength, camaraderie— also serve to win battles outside the ring.
