Aruban Sarah-Quita Offringa has been crowned the world champion of Windsurf Freestyle for the 18th time after defeating Maaike Huvermann in the Superfinal on the fourth day of the Fuerteventura World Championship, held on the beaches of Sotavento.
The Aruban windsurfer Sarah-Quita Offringa added her eighteenth Freestyle world title on Monday by overcoming double elimination and defeating Dutch competitor Maaike Huvermann in the Superfinal of the 38th World Windsurfing Championship in Fuerteventura. The victory, achieved on the beaches of Sotavento, brings her total world championships to 29 in her career.
An epic comeback under the winds of Sotavento
The day began with strong trade winds and a swell, creating gusty conditions that complicated maneuvers. Huvermann had the advantage after winning the single elimination, meaning she only needed one victory to claim her first world title. Offringa, on the other hand, had to win two consecutive heats to retain her crown.
The Aruban started her comeback by defeating German Lisa Kloster, who finished the championship in third place. She then faced Huvermann in the first final, which took place at 13:39. Offringa took the lead and never let go, thus forcing a Superfinal.
The final heat started at 14:03. Offringa once again took control from the beginning, while Huvermann attempted to close the gap with risky maneuvers. However, the Aruban maintained control of the heat until the end and secured the title.
A legendary record that grows in the Canaries
With this new success, Offringa expands her legend in the world of windsurfing. The 33-year-old athlete from Aruba is the most decorated in Freestyle history, with 18 titles, and also has 11 in other disciplines. Her dominance in Sotavento, where she has previously won, reinforces the connection between the competition and the coasts of Fuerteventura.
