Around twenty sailors from the Optimist class participated between Monday and Wednesday in a new activity of the FIVT-DXT Training School at the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, led by Luis Miguel Hernández Tirado ‘Wichy’.
The Real Club Náutico de Tenerife (RCNT) hosted a new session of the FIVT-DXT Training School focused on the Optimist class from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15. The activity, funded by DXTenerife, brought together around twenty young sailors from the Náutico, the Club de Mar Radazul, and CD Goodbow Isora.
Theoretical-practical training and final regatta
On Monday and Tuesday, the theoretical-practical part took place, with sessions both on land and on the water. On Wednesday, participants competed in the XII Regata Autoridad Portuaria de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which served as a grand finale to the training.
Intermediate-level sailors were able to benefit from the knowledge of the more experienced ones, in a collaborative learning environment. The club coaches also benefited from the experience, as highlighted by the organisers.
Wichy Hernández: “Establishing pre-regatta routines”
The training director, Luis Miguel Hernández Tirado ‘Wichy’, explained that the main focus was “to try to establish pre-regatta routines, a very important aspect of communication between sailors and coaches.” Additionally, other aspects such as trimming, driving techniques under different wind conditions, and strategy and tactics were addressed.
“I tried to make them see that they need to have a working method and give great importance to everything that depends on them, because there are many factors we cannot control in this sport,” Wichy clarified.
The coach expressed satisfaction with the group's involvement and positively evaluated the initiative of the Insular Sailing Federation of Tenerife (FIVT) to bring together different clubs from the island. “I leave happy with the commitment and eagerness of the team. I appreciate that they counted on me to contribute my bit,” he stated.
Looking ahead to the 26/27 season
This training session adds to the one held earlier this month in the waters of Murcia and is part of the preparation calendar for the FIVT-DXT Training School for the 2026/2027 season. The young Canarian sailors continue their training for future competitions, with the support of the involved institutions and clubs.
For sailing enthusiasts in Tenerife, these sessions represent an opportunity to see the future talents of the regional sport grow. The next event will be the Regata Autoridad Portuaria, which has already served as a testing ground for the participants.
