Marcos Garabatos, runner-up in the Spanish children's 50m butterfly in Las Palmas

The young swimmer from Club Natación Mos wins silver in the 50m butterfly and bronze in the 100m freestyle at the Summer Spanish Children's Championship held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The swimmer from Club Natación Mos, Marcos Garabatos, has once again demonstrated his talent in the pool. During the Summer Spanish Children's Championship held from July 16 to 19 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the young athlete secured the silver medal in the 50 meters butterfly, becoming the national runner-up. Not content with that, he also added a bronze in the 100 meters freestyle and narrowly missed the podium in the 50 freestyle with a fourth place finish.

A runner-up that tastes like glory

In the heats of the 50m butterfly, Garabatos already signalled his intentions by setting a new Best Galician Record (MMG) with a time of 25.86 seconds. That time allowed him to enter the final with confidence, and once there, he did not disappoint: he took home the silver medal. “I am very happy, it has been an incredible championship,” declared the swimmer, visibly emotional. For Club Natación Mos, this result marks a milestone in its recent history, placing one of its athletes among the national elite in the children's category.

Bronze and fourth place: the icing on the cake

But Marcos's performance in Las Palmas was not limited to the butterfly. In the 100 meters freestyle, the swimmer from Mos once again broke the MMG in the heats with a time of 53.21 seconds, a mark he matched in the final to secure the bronze medal. In the 50 freestyle, he just missed the podium with a fourth place finish, also improving the Galician record in the qualifying round (24.28 seconds). Additionally, in the 100 butterfly, he finished 13th with a new personal best (1:00.41). “It is a pride to see how he works and improves every day,” said his coach, Luis Alberto Pereira “Xouba”, who has been key in this progression.

A dream season for Club Natación Mos

With these results, Marcos Garabatos concludes an extraordinary season in which he has shown constant evolution. The club, based in Mos (Pontevedra), celebrates the success of their swimmer, who has already become a reference for the youth team. “He is an example for the younger ones,” club sources stated. The event in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has also served for the young athlete to gain experience in high-level competitions, something that will undoubtedly benefit him in future championships.

From Club Natación Mos, they are already thinking about the next season. “We will continue working to ensure Marcos keeps improving,” Pereira indicated. For Galician swimming fans, seeing a young local talent shine on a national stage is a source of pride. And although the competition took place far from home, the taste of these medals feels glorious for all Galician sports.
