Mogán inaugurates a solar plant at the Interchange that will prevent 67 tonnes of CO₂ per year

The Mogán Interchange has inaugurated a solar photovoltaic plant that will generate 129,237 kWh annually and prevent 67 tonnes of CO₂.

The Mogán Interchange now has a solar photovoltaic plant with batteries, which will generate 129,237 kWh per year and prevent the emission of 67 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

The Mogán Interchange, located in Puerto de Mogán, has inaugurated a solar photovoltaic plant with energy storage. The installation, partially funded by European Next Generation EU funds, represents another step in the sustainability strategy of the municipality and the island of Gran Canaria.

The plant features 108 photovoltaic modules that reach a peak power of 65.88 kWp, two 50 kW inverters, and a battery system with a capacity of 197.12 kWh. This allows for the use of generated energy even outside of peak solar radiation hours.

An investment of nearly 191,000 euros

The project has been developed by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Insular Energy Council. The total investment amounts to 190,860.43 euros, of which 147,949.34 euros have been financed by the European Union through the aid call from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The inauguration event was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Public Services, Ernesto Hernández, and the Insular Councillor for Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge, Raúl García Brink. Hernández emphasized that this plant “reinforces the sustainability of the municipality and improves the efficiency of a key public space for Mogán and Gran Canaria.”

Environmental and energy benefits

The plant will produce an estimated average of 129,237 kWh per year, significantly reducing the electrical consumption of the interchange and its dependence on the grid. Thanks to this initiative, the emission of 67.07 tonnes of CO₂ annually will be avoided, a reduction equivalent to the electrical consumption of 37 homes.

The battery storage system will allow the energy generated during the day to be used at night, optimizing self-consumption. Additionally, the surplus energy can be allocated to the charging point for electric vehicles that the Cabildo plans alongside the Town Hall, as well as to the future energy community of the municipality.

Hernández recalled that the Town Hall has already installed solar panels on other municipal buildings such as the Centre for Personal Autonomy, the Cultural Centre El Mocán, the Multipurpose Centre, and the Municipal Offices of Arguineguín. “This initiative complements the work we have been developing,” he pointed out.

García Brink highlighted that the installation “contributes to accelerating the energy transition of Gran Canaria by implementing renewable energies in strategic public infrastructures, such as the main transport interchange of such a significant tourist enclave as Mogán.”

For the residents and tourists who use the interchange daily, this plant represents an improvement in service efficiency and a step towards a cleaner energy model. The Town Hall expects that the energy community of the municipality, still in the project phase, will benefit from the energy generated in this and other similar installations.
