The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the granting of 498,400 euros in subsidies for the feeding of rearing sheep and goats. The aid, which will benefit 51 farms on the island, covers 5,600 female livestock born in 2025.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Agriculture and Livestock Department, has given the green light to the final proposal for subsidies for the rearing of sheep and goats for the 2026 financial year. The total investment amounts to 498,400 euros, which will be distributed among 51 livestock farms on the island, including those on La Graciosa.
This aid is designed to cover the feeding costs of females born in 2025 that are still in the rearing process. Specifically, 5,600 livestock heads will be subsidised, with an amount of 89 euros per eligible animal. The aim is to ensure the continuity and sustainability of the sector, as well as to promote generational change in the farms on the island.
Support for the primary sector and rural culture
The president of the Cabildo and Agriculture councillor, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted the importance of rearing beyond mere productivity. “Rearing is a key activity that goes far beyond sectoral production, as it directly contributes to the preservation of the landscape, biodiversity and rural culture,” he stated. Betancort emphasised that these subsidies represent “a concrete economic tool to protect the primary sector, ensuring ties to the territory and preserving a livestock activity that is an essential part of the identity of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.”
The call for 2026 was published in the Official Bulletin of the Province last May, and the application submission period ended with a total of 51 applications. Following the evaluation by the instructing and collegiate bodies, all of them have been approved, with no rejections or withdrawals recorded. This reflects, according to sources from the Cabildo, the well-designed nature of the call and the real need of the sector.
Deadline for justifying the funds
The island corporation reminds beneficiaries that they have one month, starting from the official notification of the final resolution, to justify the use of the funds received. This step is mandatory to ensure that the money is used for the feeding of the rearing animals, as established in the subsidy guidelines.
For livestock farmers in Lanzarote, this aid represents an economic relief in a context of rising production costs. Rearing is a delicate phase, as it depends on the future replenishment of the herd and, therefore, the long-term viability of the farms. With this 498,400 euros, the Cabildo aims for the sector not only to be maintained but also to be renewed with guarantees.
The initiative is part of the policy of support for the primary sector promoted by the island government, which has also launched other lines of aid for the modernisation of farms and the improvement of the marketing of local products.
