The Canary Islands Government has disbursed 920,000 euros in subsidies for Family Meeting Points (PEF) during the first half of 2026. This was announced by the Minister of Presidency, Public Administration, Justice and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto, after the Government Council. This allocation aims to ensure the operation of key resources in the protection of minors and the alleviation of judicial burdens.
Ten beneficiary entities across all islands
The aid has reached ten entities operating on different islands. Among them is the Canary Foundation Centre for Family Care in Tenerife, which manages the PEF in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, North Tenerife, and Fuerteventura. Also, the Domitila Hernández Association from Tacoronte, responsible for the Families Domitila 2026 programme.
In Lanzarote, the Canary Association for Family, Educational and Psychosocial Intervention and Mediation+Family has received funding for its PEF. Meanwhile, Spanish Red Cross has been subsidised for the Family Meeting Points in El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, and Santa Lucía de Tirajana. The Canary Family Guidance Centre Foundation has also obtained funds for the Parental Coordination programme.
A safe space for minors in family crises
The Family Meeting Points are specialised social resources that offer a neutral and safe environment. Here, a multidisciplinary technical team facilitates the relationship of children and adolescents with their parents or other relatives when there are conflicts or the bond is interrupted. According to the Ministry, these spaces act as psychosocial intervention that ensures child development in a stable and violence-free environment.
Minister Barreto emphasised that these resources are essential in situations of family crisis or conflict, as well as when there is a risk to minors. In addition, they address both judicial and public administration referrals, such as councils and town halls.
Specific attention to victims of gender violence
The PEF has its own protocol for cases of gender violence. They recognise the status of minors and their mothers as victims, guiding the intervention towards their protection, assistance, and recovery. This approach is key to preventing situations that may lead to gender-based violence.
