The Civil Guard has arrested a man as the presumed author of more than thirty property crimes, including three burglaries in a holiday home and a hotel complex in Corralejo.
The Civil Guard of Fuerteventura has apprehended the alleged perpetrator of a wave of burglaries that caused alarm among tourists and business owners on the island. The detainee, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of more than thirty property crimes, including three burglaries in a holiday home and in several rooms of a hotel complex in Corralejo.
An Investigation That Started with Several Complaints
The events date back to last July, when agents from the Main Post of Corralejo began receiving multiple complaints from tourists and owners of tourist accommodations. In all of them, a similar modus operandi was reported: the perpetrator accessed the homes or hotels by climbing and stole cash and credit cards from various banking entities.
The investigation, which lasted several weeks, allowed agents to gather a set of evidence that pointed consistently towards the same suspect. Among the most relevant evidence were the images from the surveillance systems installed in the affected establishments, which helped partially reconstruct the sequence of events.
The Trail of the Bank Cards, Key in the Investigation
Investigators also analysed the movements of one of the stolen bank cards, which allowed them to temporally and spatially link the suspect to the reported acts. This was further supported by a direct recognition by one of the complainants, who unequivocally identified the alleged perpetrator.
With all these indications, the Civil Guard was able to fully identify the suspect and proceeded to arrest him on July 14. The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance of Puerto del Rosario, which ordered his provisional imprisonment.
The news has caused great concern among the tourism business owners of Corralejo, one of the most visited areas of Fuerteventura. Many of them had reported an increase in burglaries in recent months, which had generated insecurity among visitors. With this arrest, it is hoped that tranquillity will return to the area.
The Civil Guard does not rule out that the detainee may be involved in other similar criminal acts that have occurred on the island, so the investigation remains open.
