The mayor of Tuineje, David Herrera, demands that the State transfer the fishing vessel intercepted on Friday with 20 migrants on board to the port of Puerto del Rosario. He denounces a lack of official information and inadequate safety conditions at the Gran Tarajal dock.
The Tuineje City Council has requested the immediate removal of the fishing vessel that arrived last Friday at the Gran Tarajal port with 20 men of Maghreb origin on board. The mayor, David Herrera, insists that the vessel be relocated and secured at the Puerto del Rosario dock, as he believes the current docking does not meet necessary safety conditions.
The vessel, which had been reported stolen in Morocco, was intercepted in Canary waters two days ago in a joint operation by the Civil Guard and Maritime Rescue. After the disembarkation of the migrants, carried out by the Salvamar Mizar, the fishing vessel remained docked at the commercial dock of Gran Tarajal, with no crew on board.
Herrera has criticized that neither the Tuineje City Council nor the Government of the Canary Islands have received official information from state agencies about the operation. “We have had to gather information through Canarian Ports, the Civil Guard, and Maritime Rescue,” the mayor stated in a press release.
The mayor emphasizes that the port of Gran Tarajal does not have adequate docking facilities for a vessel of this type, which poses a safety risk. Therefore, he demands that the fishing vessel be towed to the port of Puerto del Rosario, which is managed by the State. “It was the state agencies that assumed all the operational responsibility for the interception and, therefore, they must also take charge of its custody,” Herrera argued.
The City Council is already working with the director of Canarian Ports in Fuerteventura, Juan Luis López, to gather all official information and convey the request to the central government. Meanwhile, the vessel remains at the Gran Tarajal dock, awaiting a decision that, according to the mayor, must come as soon as possible to ensure safety in the area.
The arrival of the 20 migrants, all adult males of Maghreb origin, occurred on Friday in the south of Fuerteventura. They were attended to by emergency services and transferred to official facilities for identification and legal processing. No incidents were reported during the disembarkation.
This incident reignites the debate on coordination between administrations in managing irregular immigration in the Canaries. Herrera has insisted on the need for the State to inform and collaborate with local and regional authorities to avoid situations like the current one.
For now, the Tuineje City Council hopes that its request will be addressed in the coming days while it continues to gather information to understand all the details of the operation.
