The Tuineje City Council is bringing the initial approval of the PEMU to committee this Thursday, a key regulatory instrument for coordinating the response to any emergency in the municipality.
The Tuineje City Council has taken a historic step by submitting to the information committee this Thursday the proposed agreement for the initial approval of the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU). This document, which will be voted on in full next Tuesday the 21st, will provide the municipality with a regulatory framework for managing any emergency situation, from fires to floods.
The mayor David Herrera has described the PEMU as "a fundamental document for police forces, civil protection, and fire services, among others, to work under municipal guidelines in specific situations." Until now, Tuineje lacked this instrument, which forced improvisation in each crisis.
Second municipality on the island to approve the PEMU
With this plan, Tuineje becomes the second municipality in Fuerteventura with less than 20,000 inhabitants to have a PEMU. This achievement has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Insular Council, through the Department of Emergencies and Security led by Lolina Negrín. Herrera has highlighted "the decisive support and direct involvement" of the Council, which has been a "key piece" in structuring and validating the technical document.
A plan that benefits residents and security forces
The police councillor, Jonathan Peña, has expressed his "great satisfaction" with the management of the document and has indicated that it "will facilitate the work of the security forces, benefiting residents and the institution in case it is needed." The PEMU establishes clear protocols for resource mobilization, evacuation of areas, and coordination between bodies, which will reduce response times in emergencies.
For the residents of Tuineje, this plan represents a guarantee of safety against events such as wildfires, floods, or serious accidents. The municipality, which encompasses areas like Gran Tarajal and Tiscamanita, will finally have a document that defines responsibilities and procedures.
Next steps and timelines
The initial approval in committee is the first step. After the full council meeting on Tuesday the 21st, a public consultation period will open for residents to submit objections. The PEMU is expected to come into effect in the coming months, once all administrative procedures have been completed. The City Council advises citizens to stay tuned to official channels for details of the plan and recommendations in case of emergency.
