The Mauritanian Women's Sociocultural Association DIMBE is organising a week of activities in Puerto del Rosario from July 22 to 25, with the support of the Fuerteventura Cabildo and the Town Hall. The programme includes conferences, sports, music, and gastronomy to promote intercultural coexistence.
The DIMBE Intercultural Week will kick off on July 22 in Puerto del Rosario with an inaugural conference titled 'Between Two Shores: Mauritania and the Canary Islands, a Bridge of Coexistence, Integration, and Cooperation'. The event, which will run until July 25, aims to create a meeting space for the different communities living in Fuerteventura.
Four Days of Activities for Integration
The programme includes conferences, dialogue tables, cultural and sports activities, music, and gastronomy. The goal is to promote coexistence, respect for diversity, and civic participation. The president of DIMBE, Hawa Touré, explained that the initiative "arises as a response to the need to create spaces for coexistence that strengthen relationships between the different communities present on the Island."
The president of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, Lola García, highlighted that "Fuerteventura is an open, diverse, and welcoming island, where people from different backgrounds coexist and build a richer society every day." Meanwhile, the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, valued "a week that highlights the cultural diversity that exists not only in the municipality but throughout the Island."
Sports and Gastronomy as Tools for Dialogue
One of the highlights will be the meeting between Canarian wrestling and traditional Senegalese wrestling, conceived as a symbol of dialogue between cultures through sport. Additionally, there will be an intercultural gastronomic space that will showcase the culinary richness of the Canary Islands and various African countries.
The days will also focus on issues of great social relevance, such as cooperation between the Canary Islands and Africa, the defence of human rights, women's leadership, equality of opportunities, and the role of youth in building a more inclusive society. Meetings will be held to raise awareness about the eradication of female genital mutilation.
The DIMBE Intercultural Week is supported by the Fuerteventura Cabildo, the Puerto del Rosario Town Hall, and the Cajamar entity. The president of DIMBE, Hawa Touré, emphasised that it is "a citizen participation project that uses culture as a tool for integration, learning, and social transformation."
The event will take place from July 22 to 25 in Puerto del Rosario. All activities are open to the public and free of charge. An opportunity to celebrate the diversity that characterises Fuerteventura and to build bridges between cultures.
