The Guarapo and Plácido cheese dairies from La Gomera have been awarded the grand gold and gold medals, respectively, at the Official Agrocanarias Cheese Competition 2026.

Guarapo's smoked goat cheese has won the grand gold medal in the semi-cured pasteurised category, while Plácido's smoked cheese has received the gold medal in raw milk soft goat cheese. Both productions were honoured at the Official Agrocanarias Cheese Competition 2026, held on June 24 and 25 in La Palma.

Recognition for the Gomera Cheese Sector

The president of the La Gomera Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, congratulated the award-winning dairies and highlighted that these accolades add to a long list of recognitions received by the island's agri-food products in regional, national, and international competitions. "It is a source of pride to see how the work and dedication of our producers are valued beyond our borders," he stated.

Curbelo emphasised the support that the Cabildo provides to producers through the Alimentos de La Gomera brand, an initiative aimed at promoting the professionalisation of the agri-food sector and reinforcing its role in the island's economy. "These awards demonstrate that we are on the right track," he added.

A Record Participation Competition

The Official Agrocanarias Cheese Competition 2026, organised by the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA), featured 264 entries from 85 dairies across all the islands, representing a 13.33% increase compared to the previous year. In total, 66 awards were given, including 38 grand gold medals and 22 gold medals, as well as six special distinctions.

For the Gomera cheesemakers, this success represents a boost to their artisanal work and a gateway to the regional market. "Each award is an opportunity for our cheese to reach more Canary Island homes," commented a spokesperson from the Guarapo dairy.

Guarapo's smoked goat cheese, made using traditional methods, has impressed the judges with its texture and intense flavour. Meanwhile, Plácido's smoked cheese, made from raw milk, has stood out for its freshness and aroma. Both products exemplify the quality that characterises La Gomera's cheese production.

Island Pride and Institutional Support

The news has been received with joy on the island, where cheese is an emblematic product of the local cuisine. "These awards put La Gomera on the Canary Islands' cheese map," affirmed Curbelo. The Cabildo will continue to support producers with training and promotion, aiming for them to keep achieving success.

For cheese lovers, these awards are an invitation to discover the flavours of La Gomera. The award-winning cheeses will be available at the usual sales points on the island and at regional food fairs.
