A 40-year-old woman suffered serious multiple injuries after being hit in the Plaza Pueblo Marinero in Costa Teguise. She was stabilised and transferred to the Hospital Molina Orosa.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday in the heart of the tourist area of Costa Teguise. The victim, a Spanish national, was struck by a car while crossing the road at the height of the Plaza Pueblo Marinero, a very busy area due to its nightlife offerings.

The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2 received the alert at 00:09 hours. Two ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were immediately dispatched — one medicalised and another for basic life support — along with officers from the Teguise Local Police.

Serious multiple injuries and urgent transfer

The paramedics who arrived at the scene found the woman conscious but with multiple injuries. The initial assessment by the SUC determined that she had a serious multiple injury prognosis, so she was stabilised at the scene before being evacuated.

The transfer was carried out in a medicalised ambulance to the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, the referral centre for the island of Lanzarote. There, she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for specialised care, according to hospital sources.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a 35-year-old man, tested negative for alcohol and drugs, according to sources from the investigation. He remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with the officers.

The Local Police investigates the causes

The Teguise Local Police took charge of securing the area and preparing the corresponding report. Officers are gathering testimonies and reviewing security cameras from nearby establishments to clarify how the accident occurred.

The initial hypotheses point to a possible distraction by the driver or a reckless crossing by the pedestrian, although none are ruled out. The section of the avenue where the incident occurred lacks a marked pedestrian crossing in the vicinity of the square, which has reopened the debate on road safety in the area.

For the residents of Costa Teguise, this is not an isolated case. In the last two years, at least three accidents have been recorded in the vicinity of the Plaza Pueblo Marinero, a spot particularly busy with tourists and residents during summer nights. The town hall announced that it will study the installation of speed reducers and the improvement of pedestrian signage.

The woman remains hospitalised with a reserved prognosis. Her family has been informed and is at the hospital waiting for news about her condition.
