Next Friday, July 24, at 19:00, a demonstration will march through the streets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to denounce the economic blockade of the United States against Cuba. The march will start from Parque San Telmo and end at Plaza de la Feria.

The Canarian Cuban Solidarity Network, along with social, trade union, and political organizations, has called for a demonstration in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for next Friday, July 24 at 19:00. The route will begin at Parque San Telmo and conclude at Plaza de la Feria, in an act of rejection of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for over six decades.

The organizers denounce that the blockade has intensified in recent months, especially under the administration of Donald Trump, with new sanctions aimed at preventing fuel from reaching the island. This policy of economic suffocation exacerbates the energy crisis and the harsh living conditions of the Cuban population, according to the conveners.

A Mobilization with Historical Roots

The protest aims not only to denounce the external aggression but also to acknowledge Cuba's historical solidarity with other peoples. Since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, the Caribbean nation has contributed to the liberation of African nations such as Angola and Namibia, and has sent medical brigades to multiple countries, including Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The conveners believe it is a moral obligation to return part of the aid received to the Cuban people. "Defending Cuba today against the blockade is defending the right of all peoples to live without economic blackmail or permanent aggression," they state in a statement.

Impact on the Canarian Community

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a large Cuban community and historical ties to the Caribbean island. The demonstration seeks to mobilize residents and supporters to show their support and pressure for a change in U.S. policy. Hundreds of people are expected to participate, according to the organizers.

The event is on Friday, July 24 at 19:00 at Parque San Telmo. Attendees will march through the city centre to Plaza de la Feria, where a final manifesto will be read.
