The brown bin for organic waste has been implemented in Barranquillo de Don Zoilo, adding up to 26 neighbourhoods in the Gran Canaria capital. Residents can obtain the key and the first hundred in person will receive a free 15-litre bin.
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has expanded this week the organic waste collection service to Barranquillo de Don Zoilo, meaning the brown bin is now present in 26 neighbourhoods of the city. Residents in this area can now register to obtain the key that opens the bins, and the first hundred to do so in person will receive a 15-litre bin and twenty biodegradable bags.
To facilitate the process, the Council has set up an information stand at number 21 on Párroco Villar Reina street. There, questions about the operation are answered, registrations are formalised, and access devices are handed out. Those who prefer can also register online through the municipal website.
This new addition is part of the gradual rollout of the fifth bin across the five districts of the capital. The next planned location is the Sansofé urbanisation, where the service will be implemented in the coming weeks. The Councillor for Urban Hygiene and Carnival, Héctor Alemán, has encouraged residents to use the service and highlighted that separating organic waste facilitates its transformation into compost and reduces the waste sent to landfill.
What can be deposited in the brown bin
The bin is intended for biodegradable waste generated in households. It accepts food scraps, vegetable kitchen waste, peels and pits from fruit, meat, fish, and seafood, both raw and cooked, as well as spoiled or expired food.
Dairy products, eggshells, and nut shells, bread, pastries, cereals, coffee grounds, filters, and tea bags can also be deposited. This list includes kitchen paper and dirty napkins, as well as small branches, leaves, flowers, pruning waste, corks, sawdust, wood shavings, and natural threads.
The collected waste is transported to the Ecopark managed by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, where it is processed to convert it into compost for agricultural use. Separating organic matter allows for the recovery of part of household waste and reduces the volume of rubbish that ends up in landfill.
The neighbourhoods that already have the service
In addition to Barranquillo de Don Zoilo, the brown bin is installed in Los Tarahales, Ciudad Jardín, Montalex, La Galera, Las Coloradas, La Minilla, Cuatro Cañones, San Antonio, El Polvorín, Santa Margarita, San Francisco de Paula, Lomo Apolinario, San Francisco, El Zardo, and Casa Ayala.
The rollout also extends to Nueva Isleta, Guanarteme, Altavista, Monteluz, Zurbarán, Fincas Unidas, San Nicolás, Costa Ayala, Cañada Honda, and the Madera and Corcho area. The system began to be implemented in December 2023 in Mercalaspalmas and in municipal nursery schools.
For residents who do not yet have the service, it is expected to continue expanding gradually across the districts. Those who want to know if their neighbourhood is included can check the City Council's website or visit the information points that are periodically set up.
