The General Directorate of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy of the SCS has set up a blood extraction point from this Wednesday until Friday the 24th, and from the 27th to the 29th of July, at the Jesús Arencibia Cultural Space, with morning and afternoon hours.
The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has launched a temporary blood donation initiative in the capital neighbourhood of Tamaraceite, as part of its strategy to bring extraction closer to residents and ensure supply during the summer.
The donation point has been operational since this Wednesday and will remain open until Friday, July 24, and then from July 27 to 29, at the Jesús Arencibia Cultural Space. The opening hours are from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM and from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM, as reported by the General Directorate of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy of the SCS.
The initiative aims to facilitate donations for residents in this area of the Gran Canaria capital, avoiding trips to the usual fixed donation points. During the summer months, donations typically decline, while the transfusion needs of Canary Islands hospitals remain stable or even increase, making it crucial to maintain a constant blood supply.
Blood and its components cannot be artificially manufactured, so voluntary, altruistic, and regular donation remains the only guarantee to ensure availability when a patient needs it. Each donation can save or improve the lives of several people facing illnesses, surgical interventions, or treatments requiring transfusions.
In addition to this temporary point, the SCS reminds that there are fixed donation points in Gran Canaria. The headquarters of the General Directorate of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy, located on Alfonso XIII Street in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is open Monday to Friday from 9:15 AM to 8:30 PM (except holidays) and has parking for donors. In Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the fixed point at the Vecindario Health Centre is open Monday to Wednesday from 5:15 PM to 8:15 PM, and Thursday and Friday from 10:15 AM to 1:15 PM.
Donations can also be made without an appointment at public network hospitals: the Insular Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM; the Materno Infantil Hospital, Monday to Friday from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM; and the Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín University Hospital, Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM. At Hospiten Roca San Agustín, donations can be made by prior telephone appointment (928 301 012, option 8) on Fridays from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, except holidays.
To donate blood, certain basic requirements must be met: be between 18 and 65 years old (up to 60 for first-time donors), weigh more than 50 kilos, be in good general health, and not be pregnant. For any questions, the SCS provides a free phone number 900 234 061 and the website efectodonacion.com.
The SCS encourages the population of Tamaraceite and surrounding areas to visit the Jesús Arencibia Cultural Space during the designated days, thus contributing to maintaining blood reserves in the province.
