The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will kick off tomorrow, Wednesday, July 23, the commemorative events of the Gesta of July 25 with the continuous reading of the novel 1797. Five Days of July, by the historian and official chronicler of the city, Luis Cola Benítez. The event, organized by the Tertulia Amigos del 25 de Julio, will take place at the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife starting at 17:30, with free entry until capacity is reached.
The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, will preside over the event and participate in the reading alongside institutional representatives, members of the organizing entity, and other guests. Bermúdez has encouraged citizens to join this initiative: “I invite all those who want to learn a little more about the history of our municipality to read the book by Luis Cola Benítez, a well-documented work that faithfully reflects what happened during those dates.” The mayor added that “attending this reading tomorrow at the Real Club Náutico is a magnificent way to connect with that piece of history of which we are so proud.”
The novel 1797. Five Days of July recreates the events surrounding the attack by the British squadron commanded by Admiral Horatio Nelson against the port of Santa Cruz in July 1797. Through a narrative based on exhaustive historical documentation, the work transports the reader to the five decisive days that culminated in the victory of the militias and the people of Santa Cruz, an episode that marked the identity of the Tenerife capital.
The president of the Tertulia Amigos del 25 de Julio, Carlos Pallés Darias, explained that this reading constitutes the main activity of the entity within the framework of this year's commemoration. The aim is to bring one of the most representative historical accounts of the defence of Santa Cruz against the British attack closer to the public. Pallés also highlighted that the Tertulia will place special emphasis on promoting two key figures: General Benavides and Tomé Cano, for which a specific programme of activities will be developed throughout the year.
With this proposal, the City Council and the Tertulia Amigos del 25 de Julio reaffirm their commitment to the dissemination of Santa Cruz's historical heritage and the preservation of the memory of one of the most significant episodes in the history of the Tenerife capital. The continuous reading of Luis Cola Benítez's work presents an opportunity for residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the events that forged the identity of the city.
