The Town Hall of Mogán, in collaboration with the Canarian Employment Service, has launched the PFAE Mogán Agrojardín, which will allow twelve unemployed individuals to obtain professional certificates in gardening and agriculture.
Twelve residents of Mogán have begun their training in the Alternating Training Programme with Employment (PFAE) Mogán Agrojardín, an initiative co-funded by the Canarian Employment Service and the Town Hall of Mogán. The programme, which started on June 1, lasts for eleven months and offers participants the opportunity to obtain two level 1 professional certificates: one in gardening and another in agriculture.
The Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, accompanied by several local government councillors, held a meeting with the students and teaching staff at the Municipal Training Centre in Playa de Mogán. During the meeting, impressions were exchanged about the first weeks of activity, which have been well received by the participants.
“We have spoken with them, and they have conveyed that they are happy, very motivated, and eager to enter the job market once they complete their training,” said the acting Councillor for Training and Employment, Grimanesa Artiles. The councillor detailed that the Town Hall has received a grant of €369,701 from the Canarian Employment Service to launch the project, along with a municipal contribution of €11,000 for ongoing expenses.
The PFAE Mogán Agrojardín focuses on the agricultural professional area. Students will pursue certificates in “Installation and maintenance of gardens and green areas” and “Auxiliary activities in nurseries, gardens, and gardening centres.” A new feature this year is the inclusion of a specialisation in agriculture that will allow participants to work on creating an urban garden.
“The agriculture specialisation is a new feature this year. We will work on creating an urban garden, and we are quite excited because we are already starting to see how this project sparks the interest of the students,” explained the director of the PFAE, María Esther Sánchez. Sánchez positively assessed the generational diversity of the group, which combines profiles of different ages and experiences.
The programme combines theoretical and practical training, aiming to improve the employability of participants in sectors such as gardening and agriculture, which are in demand in the municipality. Students acquire skills in maintaining green areas, managing nurseries, and basic agricultural techniques, opening doors for both wage employment and self-employment.
The Town Hall of Mogán supports such initiatives as a tool to combat unemployment and promote professional qualification among residents. The alternating training allows participants to gain real practical experience while studying, which increases their chances of job placement once the programme is completed.
The twelve students of the PFAE Mogán Agrojardín will complete their training in May 2027, at which point they will receive their professional certificates. The Town Hall is already working on finding professional internships and potential job opportunities for the participants, in collaboration with companies in the sector in the region.
