The Teguise Town Hall has launched a cleaning plan for septic tanks and cesspits on the island of La Graciosa, a key action to improve sanitation and health on the eighth Canary Island.

Municipal workers have already travelled to La Graciosa to begin the emptying and maintenance tasks of the autonomous sanitation facilities. According to sources from the Town Hall, this is a scheduled intervention that responds to the needs identified in the residential and tourist area.
The initiative seeks to prevent possible uncontrolled discharges and ensure the proper management of wastewater in an area that is particularly sensitive from an ecological standpoint. La Graciosa, declared a Marine Reserve and part of the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago, has a stable population of around 700 inhabitants, which multiplies during the high season.
The Teguise Services councillor has stated that the cleaning is carried out with the necessary frequency to keep the existing infrastructure in good condition. “This is a priority action to preserve public health and the natural environment of La Graciosa,” he indicated.
The work includes the inspection of each emptying point, the extraction of sludge and waste, and their subsequent transfer to an authorised treatment plant in Lanzarote.
