The Government of the Canary Islands declares a pre-alert for coastal phenomena in Lanzarote and La Graciosa from the early hours of Monday. Waves of up to 5 metres and wind gusts exceeding 70 km/h are expected in the south of the island.
The Government of the Canary Islands has activated the pre-alert for coastal phenomena in Lanzarote and La Graciosa starting at 00:00 hours this Monday, 20th July. The measure responds to the forecast of worsening sea conditions and strengthening trade winds that will last, at least, until Tuesday.
Waves of up to 5 metres in the northeast
According to the General Directorate of Emergencies, the pre-alert specifically affects the northeast coasts of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. There, a combined sea is expected with waves of between two and two and a half metres of significant height, although isolated waves could reach up to double that, i.e., nearly five metres.
Authorities recommend exercising extreme caution along the coast and avoiding approaching areas exposed to the sea. Navigation should also be carried out with maximum prudence, especially in the areas most affected by the waves.
Wind gusts exceeding 70 km/h in the south
The wind will be another prominent feature of the day. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) predicts that the trade winds will gain intensity from this Sunday and throughout Monday, with occasionally very strong gusts that could exceed 70 kilometres per hour, especially in the interior of the southern half of Lanzarote during the latter part of the day.
This situation of intense wind will persist on Tuesday, although a slight thermal improvement is expected. AEMET does not rule out new strong gusts in the interior of the south of the island during the early hours of Tuesday.
Temperatures and haze: no major changes
Regarding temperatures, no significant variations are expected. However, thermometers could reach 30 degrees in the southeast of Lanzarote on both this Sunday and Monday. Haze will remain at high levels, although it will be light.
For Tuesday, the forecast indicates a slight thermal improvement in the interior of Lanzarote, but the regime of strong trade winds will persist, so the situation will continue to be monitored.
The Government of the Canary Islands recommends securing objects that could be displaced by the wind, such as terrace furniture or pots, and to always follow the instructions of emergency services. It also advises staying informed about the weather developments through official sources.
“We recommend avoiding activities in coastal areas exposed to the waves and exercising extreme caution in navigation,” states the General Directorate of Emergencies.
For residents and visitors of Lanzarote, the recommendation is clear: if it is not necessary, it is better not to approach the coast during the next few hours. The sea will be rough and the wind, especially in the south, could complicate any outdoor activities. The pre-alert will remain active until weather conditions improve.
