On Saturday, July 25, the El Hoyo neighbourhood will host the 'Memorial Pedro Yánez Pérez' chess tournament, as part of the patron festivities in honour of the Virgen de Lourdes. The event, free and open to all ages, will start at 16:00 in the local community association.
The Aguas de Teror 8×8 Chess section of C.D. Los Álamos-El Pino is organising a new edition of the El Hoyo neighbourhood chess tournament, which this year debuts its name in memory of an emblematic resident. The Memorial Pedro Yánez Pérez will take place on Saturday, July 25, starting at 16:00 in the local community association of the neighbourhood, with free entry and participation for all ages.
A tribute to a pioneer of local chess
The tournament, which is part of the patron festivities in honour of the Virgen de Lourdes, pays tribute to Pedro Yánez Pérez, a resident of the neighbourhood and player of the Aguas de Teror 8×8 club. Born in 1964, Pedro began his chess journey under the guidance of teacher Ángel Ojeda during his school years, and since then he was a pillar of local competition. He organised tournaments during the neighbourhood festivities alongside his brother Carlos, with whom he maintained a healthy rivalry to see who would take the victory.

Your legacy lives in every move, in every memory,” reads the tournament poster. Pedro was also part of the historic U.C.D. Teror, defending the first board, and later played for C.A. Centro Goya in two stages, 1990 and 2013, before joining Aguas de Teror 8×8.

The tournament will be played with a time control of 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment per move, ensuring fast and exciting games. The organisation is managed by the Aguas de Teror 8×8 Chess section, in collaboration with the Virgen del Lourdes Community Association and the Sports Department of the Teror City Council.

Teror club, founded in 1985 by local Ricardo Naranjo, was the seed from which players like José Antonio Acosta, Maximino Acosta, Carmelo Ortega, Eduardo Ortega, and Pedro Pérez emerged, all residents of the neighbourhood. Ricardo Naranjo, a key figure in Canarian chess, left his mark by teaching classes in schools and organising tournaments at the Casino de Teror and the Fiestas del Pino.
