The match, which started at 21:00, kept the hundreds of people gathered at the municipality's main meeting point on edge. The tension erupted with the goal from the Spanish team, triggering collective euphoria. At the end of the match, the celebration moved to the streets of Puerto de la Cruz, where citizens celebrated the victory without incidents.
The mayor, Leopoldo Afonso, highlighted the civic behaviour of the attendees: "Puerto de la Cruz once again demonstrated that it knows how to celebrate major events with joy, respect, and civility," he stated in a press release. Afonso also congratulated the players and coaching staff for "a victory that once again places our country's football at the top."
Special arrangements for the occasion
The City Council activated a special device that included the collaboration of municipal services and security forces to ensure the celebration proceeded smoothly. The councillor for Festivities, who coordinated the operation, positively assessed the outcome: "We worked to ensure that people could enjoy safely, and that was the case."
Spain's victory, which was achieved by a narrow margin against Argentina, marks the second World Cup title for the country, following the one won in 2010. In Puerto de la Cruz, the night continued with chants, flags, and hugs, with no significant incidents reported.
For the locals, the event was an opportunity to share a collective experience. María González, a resident of La Vera, commented: "Watching the match in the square was incredible; all together, like one big family." The City Council has thanked the citizens for their cooperation and the work of the involved services.
