The City Council of Puerto de la Cruz has launched the largest community activity programme in recent years, with over twenty weekly workshops in seven associations across the municipality.
The Citizen Participation area of the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz has designed, for the first time, a stable programme of activities that will take place throughout the year in the neighbourhoods of the municipality. The initiative starts with seven community associations, but the aim is to gradually expand it to more groups.
The councillor for the area and first deputy mayor, David Hernández, explained that the programme has not been designed from an office, but rather comes from an active listening process with the associations themselves. "We wanted to listen to the associations before acting. Each activity responds to a demand raised by the neighbours themselves," he stated.
Activities for all ages and tastes
The offer includes physical maintenance sessions aimed at promoting healthy habits and encouraging active ageing, as well as sports and outdoor dynamics that combine exercise with participation. There will also be academic support for children and young people during the school year, dance classes to promote socialisation, and craft workshops to stimulate creativity.
Additionally, music and movement sessions focused on body expression and emotional well-being will be held, along with yoga classes to improve flexibility and relaxation. The group activities aim to strengthen coexistence and teamwork, consolidating the associations as meeting spaces.
A boost to the associative movement
David Hernández highlighted that this programme is part of a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the associative fabric. "We want associations to have the tools to grow, attract more neighbours, and become references for community life in each neighbourhood," he affirmed. The goal is for associations to be lively and dynamic places that encourage the incorporation of new members.
The initiative represents a qualitative leap in the dynamisation of the neighbourhoods of Puerto de la Cruz, as for the first time a continuous programme is offered with up to three different activities per association each week. The councillor emphasised that "this investment reflects a strong commitment to strengthening the associative fabric of the municipality and improving the lives of the neighbours."
Next steps and highlighted events
The Citizen Participation area will continue to promote new initiatives throughout the year. The stable programme will be complemented by thematic workshops on specific topics according to community demands, as well as community dynamisation actions. Among the planned events is the organisation of the Neighbourhood Day, a large gathering of associations from the municipality.
A Strengthening Associative Forum will also be held, aimed at providing training, tools, and spaces for exchanging experiences to further consolidate the local associative fabric. Interested neighbours can inquire at their local associations about schedules and available spots.
