The Cabildo of Tenerife will transform the TF-180 road in Santa Cruz into an urban road with sidewalks, a roundabout, and traffic lights. The project has a budget of 15.2 million euros and an execution period of 24 months.
The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced the comprehensive transformation of the TF-180 road, one of the main access routes to the Ofra neighbourhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The initiative, which has a base bidding budget of 15,221,562 euros, aims to convert this section into an urban street adapted to the needs of residents and pedestrians, with an expected execution period of 24 months.
The island president, Rosa Dávila, explained after the Government Council that the work will be carried out between the Cervecera and the Vuelta de Los Pájaros, a stretch that currently runs through consolidated urban land and lacks connection with the rest of the island network. The goal, according to Dávila, is to adapt the road to the real needs of citizens, improving both vehicular and pedestrian mobility as well as universal access.
The councillor for Roads, Dámaso Arteaga, detailed that the project includes the creation of a continuous, accessible, and safe pedestrian pathway, as well as the construction of a roundabout at the junction towards Ofra and the reorganisation of left turns using traffic lights and central lanes. A new drainage network will also be implemented to channel rainwater, public lighting will be reinforced, and parking areas will be organised, with nearly a hundred spaces, including reserved spots for people with reduced mobility.
The future configuration of the road will feature one lane in each direction, sidewalks on both sides with a minimum width of 1.80 meters, and new green areas where space permits. Additionally, urban furniture will be installed, and bus stops will be improved, equipping them with shelters, benches, and accessibility elements.
Arteaga highlighted that many of the community contributions made during the public information period have been addressed, during which 22 objections were presented, aiming to preserve as many trees as possible. The project will also address the historical issues of rainwater drainage in the area by implementing a separate network designed for floods with a return period of 50 years.
The initiative will benefit more than 10,000 daily drivers, according to estimates from the Cabildo. With this intervention, it is expected to improve road safety and the quality of life for residents of Ofra and surrounding areas, who have been demanding a solution to traffic and pedestrianisation problems on this road for years.
The project is part of the Cabildo of Tenerife's strategy to humanise roads that pass through urban centres, prioritising pedestrians over vehicles. In the coming months, the bidding process will be opened to award the works, which will last for two years.
