The Las Palmas Animal Protection Centre has taken in 339 dogs and cats between January and June 2026. Of these, 94 have found a new home thanks to adoptions.
The Las Palmas Animal Protection Centre, located in the La Favorita area, has recorded the intake of 339 animals during the first six months of 2026. Of these, 170 were cats and 169 were dogs, according to data provided by the Department of Social Welfare, Equality, Care, and Health of the city council.
The councillor Carmen Luz Vargas visited the facilities to acknowledge the work of the staff and emphasised that the centre's sole aim is to find a home for each animal. "Each adoption represents a new opportunity for them," she stated in a press release.
94 animals adopted in the first half of the year
Of the 339 animals taken in, a total of 94 have been adopted between January and June. Of these, 56 were dogs and 38 were cats, representing a second chance for these animals that arrived at the centre in a state of abandonment or loss.
The Department attributes these results to the commitment of the public to responsible adoption. From the moment the animals enter the centre, they receive veterinary care, appropriate food, and follow-up to ensure their well-being, in order to prepare them for their future life in a family.
How to adopt a pet in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has established several channels to facilitate the adoption process. Interested parties can consult the list of available animals through the municipal website or the WhatsApp channel of the Social Welfare department.
Once the pet is chosen, the potential adopter must fill out a preliminary questionnaire that analyses aspects such as experience with animals, knowledge about care, and the conditions of the home, including available space and safety measures.
Among the requirements, the person must have sufficient time and resources to care for the pet and ensure that it is a well-considered decision. The application must be sent to the email proteccionanimal@laspalmasgc.es, from where the department will manage the process to formalise the adoption.
For residents of the Gran Canaria capital, this initiative represents an opportunity to give a home to a needy animal while contributing to reducing the number of abandonments. The centre continues to work so that more and more dogs and cats find a family.
