The Insular Directorate of the General State Administration in La Gomera presented 27 new civil guard agents on Tuesday, who will join various posts on the island to improve public safety.
The Civil Guard in La Gomera has received a boost of 27 new agents who were officially presented on Tuesday at the Insular Directorate of the General State Administration. Of these, 13 arrive with fixed positions and 14 in training, aiming to strengthen security across the island.
Distribution of new agents by posts
The personnel have been assigned to different barracks on the island: San Sebastián receives 10 guards; Valle Gran Rey, 6; Alajeró - Playa de Santiago, another 6; Hermigua-Agulo, 1; and Vallehermoso, 2. With these additions, the total staff rises to 82 agents, as reported by the Insular Director, Juan Luis Navarro Mesa.
Navarro Mesa highlighted that, in case of need, posts with fewer personnel have the support of others, allowing for a optimization of human resources and a more effective response to any incident.
Improvement in crime rate
The personnel reinforcement responds to the goal of maintaining the positive trend in La Gomera's crime rate. According to the provided data, this indicator stood at 23.6 during the first quarter of 2026, which represents a drop of 0.5 points compared to the same period in 2025 and a decrease of 7.4% compared to 2024.
To put this in context, the average in the Canary Islands is 49 and in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is 48.8, placing La Gomera well below the regional average. This good figure, according to Navarro Mesa, is not coincidental: the civic citizenship is complemented by the work of the agents.
Presentation event and institutional attendance
The event was presided over by Juan Luis Navarro Mesa, accompanied by Brigadier Justo Cascales, interim Chief of the 5th Company. It featured a wide representation of institutions, professional sectors, and elected citizens, reflecting social support for the work of the Civil Guard on the island.
For the residents of La Gomera, this reinforcement represents an additional security guarantee, especially in rural and tourist areas such as Valle Gran Rey or Playa de Santiago, where police presence is key to preventing crimes and addressing emergencies. Coordination between the different posts will allow for coverage of any eventuality.
