The Local Government Board of Telde has unanimously approved a commission to Gesplan for the comprehensive maintenance of the municipality's 33 public schools, with an investment of €1.2 million over two years.

The Telde City Council has made a radical shift in the conservation of its educational centres. The Local Government Board approved this Friday, in an extraordinary and urgent session, an agreement to commission the public company Gesplan for the comprehensive maintenance and sustainable conservation service of all the Early Childhood and Primary Education Schools (CEIP) in the municipality. The measure, driven by Mayor Juan Antonio Peña, aims to eliminate the accumulated delays in repairs and provide the centres with a continuous and specialised service.

A change of model for Telde's 33 schools

The plan, which received unanimous support from all members of the Government Board, represents a change of model in the management of school maintenance. Until now, repairs were carried out sporadically and depended on the availability of municipal resources, leading to delays and small breakdowns becoming major problems. With the new service, specific and exclusive work teams will address the needs of the 33 educational centres, with personnel, technical means, and materials of their own to intervene continuously.

The investment amounts to €1,210,205.77 for an initial period of two years. The actions will include masonry, plumbing, electricity, carpentry, painting, gardening, and general maintenance of the facilities, all with sustainability and energy efficiency criteria. The goal is for the teams to be continuously present in the schools, allowing for immediate action in response to any incidents and performing preventive maintenance that extends the useful life of the buildings.

A response to an urgent need of the educational community

The Mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, explained that the extraordinary session was convened to expedite the processing and avoid further delays. "This agreement responds to an urgent need of our schools. We did not want to wait another day to implement a stable solution that allows for quick action in response to incidents and ensures that our children develop their educational activities in the best possible conditions," he stated.

"With this plan, we are taking a historic step, because for the first time, schools will have specific and permanent maintenance teams, which will allow us to keep the facilities in better condition and prevent small breakdowns from becoming major problems," Peña added.

The Councillor for Education, Juan Francisco Artiles, also valued the change. "This commission represents a before and after for the educational centres of the municipality. We are moving from a system based on sporadic actions, conditioned by the availability of municipal resources, to planned, continuous, and preventive maintenance, with exclusive teams for the schools," he noted. Artiles highlighted that the goal is for incidents to be resolved quickly and for the centres to always be in the best condition for the educational community.

A relief for families and school staff

For the residents of Telde, especially parents with school-aged children, this news is a breath of fresh air. In recent years, the lack of municipal personnel and specialised services had made it difficult to address daily incidents, causing small repairs to drag on and affect the day-to-day operations of the schools. The 33 educational centres in the municipality, where thousands of students study, will benefit from a stable service that will improve safety, functionality, and the quality of the spaces.

The plan includes a preventive approach that, in the long term, will reduce the cost of future major works. Additionally, the incorporation of energy efficiency criteria will contribute to making the schools more sustainable. The City Council thus reinforces one of its essential competencies, ensuring a specialised service for the conservation of buildings intended for public education.

The public company Gesplan will be responsible for executing the service, with an initial duration of two years, although the City Council expects the model to consolidate and be extended. The teams will begin work in the coming weeks, once the commission is formalised.
