The City Council of Santa Cruz de La Palma signed on Thursday the nominative grants for sports clubs, in an event presided over by Mayor Asier Antona. The total investment in sports amounts to €4,606,336.82.

The City Council of Santa Cruz de La Palma has made its commitment to local sports clear this Thursday. In an event held at the Town Hall, Mayor Asier Antona, the Councillor for Sports Jesús Pérez, and the Councillor for Finance Juan Guerra signed the decrees awarding the nominative grants to the clubs in the municipality. The total allocation for sports this year amounts to €4,606,336.82, a figure that includes direct aid, improvements to facilities, and support for events.

€470,000 in direct support for clubs

Of that amount, €307,000 corresponds to nominative grants for the clubs. This is supplemented by €25,000 advanced to the Club Deportivo Mensajero for its basketball section and €8,000 for its futsal section, both for their promotion last season. Additionally, the City Council has invested €130,000 in the refurbishment of the annex of the Virgen de Las Nieves Football Field. In total, direct support for sports entities reaches €470,000.

Mayor Asier Antona emphasised that "sports is a fundamental tool for building a healthier, more cohesive society with more opportunities for our children, young people, and families." Antona highlighted the budgetary effort of the local government: "Investing in sports is investing in education, values, and quality of life." He explained that, excluding investments from other administrations, 48% of the Sports Department's own budget is allocated to supporting clubs.

Planning and responsible economic management

The Councillor for Finance, Juan Guerra, highlighted the management that enables these grants: "The support for sports that we are materialising today is the result of responsible, planned economic management committed to the needs of our city." Guerra added that the goal is for "municipal accounts to translate into useful investments for the citizens."

For his part, the Councillor for Sports, Jesús Pérez, explained that the grants respond to "the real needs of each entity" and allow for the strengthening of "a sports fabric that constitutes one of the great social assets of Santa Cruz de La Palma." Pérez recalled the advance funding to CD Mensajero so that both sections could start the season after their promotion.

Detailed distribution of nominative grants

The nominative grants are distributed among several entities. SD Tenisca will receive €45,000 for football and €20,000 for basketball (Autonomous League). CD Mensajero will have €45,000 for football and €25,000 for basketball. In Canarian wrestling, the Club de Lucha Candelaria and the Club de Lucha Aurita Tedote will each receive €40,000. The Felipe Antón Basketball School will obtain €80,000: €50,000 for the 3rd FEB team, €20,000 for the women's autonomous team, and €10,000 for promotion. The Club Baloncesto Dominicas will receive €10,000, the Chess Centre €8,000, and AFC Sambo €4,000.

Additionally, the City Council has launched a plan to improve sports facilities worth €4,020,336.82. Among the actions, the roofing of the courts in Mirca (€741,333.45), Luis Cobiella Cuevas (€620,000), San Telmo (€619,000), and Velhoco (€582,000) stand out.

"Every euro we allocate to sports results in more participation, more training, and more opportunities for our athletes," stated Jesús Pérez.

With these investments, the City Council aims for clubs to plan their seasons with certainty and for athletes to have quality facilities. For the residents of Santa Cruz de La Palma, the improvement of the courts and support for grassroots sports translates into more leisure and training options for the youth of the municipality.
